Ok... so there's this compare people application thats on face book... and I then saw there was a ad for your secrete admire and i thught ag, what the hell... can't be much harm in it.

anyway, so i give them my number, and it says R5 for a subscription... I thought nothing of it, as whats 5 rand to me... BUT there's a clear scam here... as the first sms was 5 bucks, all is sweet... but the another 2 sms's came long and the cost me 10 bucks. At which point i didn't know where my money was going...

The after that i got a couple more sms's and the sods charged me 5 bucks fro EACH sms! so... now i'm sitting here... and wondering wtf i'm gonna do.

I can't change my cell number, as I got to many contacts to make it a viable option...

And worst off I don't know the name of the company.

It's bs though... there was nothing on the site, that said I was gonna be charged 5 bucks for the sms's they are sending me...

The story just better as now, I re-formatted my pc, so i can't find there website, and my cleared my phones sms's (I do it every week)

sigh... so if any of you come across the ad... you are warned, and can you give me the sites address... I'm gonna contact the bastards somehow

There's the problems. Some will agree and some will not but the fact is that facebook has changed for the worst unfortunately. If you get asked to add an application, decline it because it all rubbish.

There must be another way to stop it without changing your number, having to change your number is just pathetic.

Hey Scotty I have been in the exact same situation.

Its not a facebook scam btw, facebook is just showing regional ads like google ads almost. However facebook is going down. I have deleted all the applications and I just ignore all the requests to join stupid apps. There is nothing more irritating when you check your email and see that someone has "sent you a message" so you think "cool I haven't heard from that person in a while" only to be greeted with a request of some sorts to join zombies or some other pointless app anyways back to the subject at hand...

In my case someone else entered the info into a similar AD and then punched in the confirmation code that came up on my phone ( I left my phone on my desk when I was taking a dump). This person was playing a joke on me I presume.

I started getting sms's telling me that I am subscribed to some or other service and the SMS cost me R5. These kept on coming through every few week. I didn't really notice the difference to my airtime and I wasn't expecting to be charged for every sms I received. Then I noticed oneday that there was a sudden drop in my airtime, and I started to monitor my airtime. I thought Vodacom was screwing me over or something. Then when I got an SMS saying I have been charged R5 and I checked my airtime and saw that I was R5 down I got pissed off to the max.

One of the smses had a number to call and I called it. I got through to a company called Integrat. They are like a service provider. I sweet talked the guy into emailing me a log of what I was billed. Oh my gawd!! they took a few hundred rand off me over the period of a couple of months

I got them to deregister me telephonically. To make matters worse the company they are hosting the service for was from portugal. So it wasnt even like I was supporting local industry.

The guy on the phone basically told me it was a scam the way its setup to work.

The thing is that having a system whereby you have to punch in a number on the website to confirm your subscription is open to abuse. There should be a stronger form of authentication. Thats my 2 cents.

I actually need to follow this up again. I am pissed off again thinking about it. The motherfukkers!

I don't understand, is it the compare people application that you subscribed to that's charging you R5 per SMS received, OR is it an advert that you clicked on and then subscribed to an SMS service?

Please post a link to the relevant thing on FB if possible...

Can't post a link cos its a page banner ad that comes up randomly. Its a thing where you get a popup that asks you to enter the your phone number. Then you usually get an sms with a validation code which you then type into the web browser and voila you have authorised them to push SMSes to you. Each time you get an SMS R5 gets deducted off your balance. A scam pure and simple as there is no benefit to using the service at all. Other than for them.

Its nothing to do with Facebook at all.

Scotty could this help you, I am trying to find out who is behind your one. The banner ad in facebook is random so it might only appear tomorrow or next or whenever...

http://www.funsms.co.za/sa.html - A company called Strikemedia is hosting it. Maybe try and call them and see if they have your num on their system.

That's why I deactivated my account.

Too much fun things coming in all at once.

But what I can't understand is how they can do this... Isn't there a law against such a scam in every country???

Wow i'm pissed off... Ya... they did send me a validation number...and me being used to south african services... I thought it was simply a subscription for say a week...

Wow... thanks Jetpacman :D at least there's someone who can understand me... and know what kind of a scam it is... Wow... can you imagaine the money they must be making though... i mean, they charge 5 bucks a pop... and they send 1 sms every 2 days +-, and that can equate to a lot of turn over if the poor guys doesn't realise he's been had

edit: I don't think I'm gonna call them in the next 2-3 days... I might just go completely ape shyte on them, and get out of hand... i'm starting to lose my temper know... and I'm a calm guy :(

How exactly does this scam work?

Can they for example just sms a random number and charge them R5?

How can they charge you for sending you a SMS? Just doesn't make sense, I'm not saying I don't believe you I definitely do, I'm saying that the service providers should obviously realize that such a system can never work on the planet earth!

This sms thing is not related to Facebook at all. Its a banner ad that appears in Facebook. Nothing to do with Facebook. The company is local and are advertising through one of the banner ad agencies that push ads onto facebook. Facebook is all about advertising. You wasting your time trying to get Facebook to help you.

Start contacting service providers to find out who is hosting this service or who has your number on their system. Just ask the call centre guys to check their database against your number. Try these for starters:

Integrat Tel 082 235 0400
Peach Mobile Tel 082 887 3359
Strike Media Tel 021 6850577

It seems like nobody else here understands your situation except me.:confused:
I also think there should be a law against it. I am also a very calm guy and I did kind of loose it with them on the phone.

The guy on the line told me that it is a scam. Just cleverly worked out to make it look legit, but the idea is to milk people of their money. He suggested to me that I start my own one if I am so pissed off with them.

Check my previous just before this one for more info...
They are making a fortune no doubt off countless people. Motherfukkers!
