Cricket South Africa have finally responded to claims of political interference in the selection of Vernon Philander in the World Cup semi-final.

The CSA board issued a statement after CEO Haroon Lorgat the CSA commissioned certain board directors to conduct a factual examination of the team selection process for the match against New Zealand.

The review comes after Mike Horn, the motivational speaker who helped the Proteas at the World Cup, confirmed on Thursday that there was political interference.

Horn, on Saturday, then clarified his comments made to the media on Thursday, saying that they were taken completely out of context.

The review took place on Friday 17 April 2015 when the panel met with Lorgat, Domingo and the Convenor of Selectors, Andrew Hudson, to establish the facts.

Below are the factual findings arising out of the examination:

"1. The team selection process and announcement followed the usual and well-established practice and procedures of the selection panel. These procedures include consulting with the chief executive on matters of transformation;

2. Having successfully undergone a fitness test, Philander was declared fit and available for selection by the medical team. Direct inquiry with him by the coach confirmed his readiness to play;

3. Hudson, Domingo and Lorgat confirmed they had received, individually or collectively, no instructions or no interference from anyone, specifically not from the Minister of Sport or from members of the CSA Board;

4. Hudson and Domingo confirmed, on behalf of the selection panel, that they are all aware and follow the protocols and guidelines established for the selectors as reconfirmed by the Board in 2013. These protocols include transformation guidelines which require the panel to consider, on merit, the selection of at least four players of colour in the starting XI;

5. The convenor and coach had consulted Lorgat who had impressed upon them the need to properly consider the best XI bearing in mind the transformation guidelines;

6. Hudson and Domingo confirmed the usual rigorous selection debates had taken place and that they had signed off the final XI with their full support and confidence;

7. The convenor, coach and selectors had confirmed their satisfaction in the final XI with specific reference in this matter to the fact that Philander was a regular and first choice player, particularly in New Zealand conditions.

8. Hudson and Domingo explained their understanding of the guidelines and confirmed that there were many occasions when more than four players of colour were selected. On the rare occasion that 3 players were selected, this was due to exceptional circumstances such as injury. In all cases the determining criteria was merit selection.

9. Domingo confirmed that he never received an SMS from Lorgat as alleged and Lorgat in turn confirmed that he had never sent an SMS to Domingo.

“Based on the above, and also noting Mike Horn’s clarifications contained in his letter of apology, it is clear that the allegations made in various media are unfounded and mischievous. The CSA Board is duly satisfied with the findings of the review panel and the performances of the selection panel, the coach and Chief Executive,” commented CSA President, Chris Nenzani.

“We would like to thank all parties for their honesty and willingness to cooperate in this process.”

“The Board would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate the Proteas on their proud World Cup campaign and acknowledged that they had given it their best shot but were narrowly beaten by an equally good team on the day,” added Nenzani

“The Board fully realizes that this is an emotive topic and one that is not easy to quell. However, the Board hopes that this matter will now be put to rest,” Nenzani concluded.

The Board and CSA will make no further comment on this matter."

So you have to fulfil your quota on merit...
That is political interference since the two concepts are fundamentally incompatible

Why not just pick the best guys for the job?
If the best guys are not people of colour, then train them up from the lower ranks to be better players.

Just because you say it's facts, does not make them facts. Fact remains that Vern was out of form, and Abbott was in much better form at the time. Abbott should have played.

It was pretty obvious that Philander wasn't performing at his best. He may have been ready, but he wasn't the best available player.

So why was Philander picked then if he had just passed a fitness test on the last minute, and we had someone better in the team to replace him with?

Transformation guidelines = still racism. Whether you did it via SMS, or during contract negotiations forcing it on the coach doesn't alter the principle.

What a load of bolox. Is everyone scared to tell the truth and how it is or was but instead hide the truth.

So the CSA investigates alleged improprieties, involving the CSA, and found them to be unsubstantiated… fair enough.

Basson blows World Cup cover-up

Sunday Times

TELFORD VICE, Cape Town

A member of Cricket SA’s (CSA) transformation committee has contradicted in Parliament the board’s insistence that they did not interfere in selection for the World Cup semi-final by sending SA team management a message to pick enough players of colour.

And a psychologist says festering unhappiness with administrators could explain SA losing the one-day series and being dominated for much of the first test in Bangladesh.

The minutes of a June 2 meeting between the Portfolio Committee for Sport and Recreation and an Eminent Persons Group (EPG) record that DA MP Solly Malatsi asked the EPG’s Willie Basson, who sits on CSA’s transformation committee, for “his views on the pace of transformation or lack thereof in (cricket), especially regarding the composition of the … team that had competed in the recent … World Cup”.

According to the minutes, “ … (Basson) said there had been mistakes on the side of cricket’s administration, where it had sent a note to the team management on the eve of the semi-final, reminding them about (CSA’s) policy on demographic representation. That had been a costly mistake because the reminder should have been drilled into the management team during the preparations for the World Cup.”

New Zealand won the hotly contested semi-final by four wickets with a ball remaining on March 24. Four days earlier SA had thumped Sri Lanka by nine wickets in their quarter-final.

The only change for the semi was the inclusion of Vernon Philander at the expense of Kyle Abbott.

Philander struggled with a hamstring injury for much of the tournament and had bowled 20.3 out of a possible 70 overs before the semi-final – in which he left the field after sending down eight of his 10 overs.

Abbott was SA’s leading bowler at the World Cup in terms of average, economy rate and strike rate.

Philander, who at that stage had taken 121 wickets in 29 tests, is among the world’s finest bowlers. However, his credibility has been unfairly and cynically damaged by the suspicion – created solely by his forced selection for the semi-final – that he is a quota player.

CSA’s initial denial of interference was published on March 31. But, on April 18, under mounting pressure, they admitted that chief executive Haroon Lorgat had been “consulted” about the make-up of the team by then selection convenor Andrew Hudson and coach Russell Domingo.

Two weeks before the EPG meeting CSA met with the same committee in Parliament and dismissed the World Cup selection controversy as “mischief media reports (that) caused regrettable harm”.

But, according to psychologist Mike McInerney, the consequences could be serious.

“The chances of what happened at the World Cup affecting the players are very high in terms of the stability of the system and the trust the players have in that system,” McInerney said.

“Both would have been damaged by what happened and it is likely to have had a ripple effect in Bangladesh. The players will feel their ownership of the team has been affected by the outside interference.

“The administrators need to demonstrate that they won’t interfere.”

Basson and CSA did not respond to emailed requests for comment.

I haven't watched any cricket involving SA since the world cup. Couldn't care less about a quota-riddled mess.
