A far-right, pro-Russia candidate is set for a shock victory in the first round of Romania's presidential election, with preliminary results leaving the prime minister, his main pro-Europe rival, out of the race.

With more than 99% of votes counted, ultranationalist Calin Georgescu has an unassailable lead of nearly 350,000 votes over centre-right candidate Elena Lasconi, with Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu, the pre-election favourite, in third.
The strong showing of Georgescu, who has no party of his own, and campaigned largely on the social media platform TikTok, came as the biggest surprise of the election.

BBC calling him far right? Must be centre left then.
Georgescu, who left the far-right Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) after it criticised his pro-Russia, anti-Nato stance, ran a viral TikTok campaign focused on reducing Romania’s need for food and energy imports and ending aid for Ukraine.

I don't know enough about Romanian politics, nor do I care TBH.

But how does that translate to "pro-Russia"? Sounds like a perfectly rational position to secure your own country's financial security - produce energy and food locally, stop sending aid. Your own country needs the money more...

Still needs to get 27% to win the actual election though. Would that be possible? I see another party's leader endorse him, but not sure if that will be enough. Much like what happens in French presidential elections when Le Pen wins the first round but the "Republican front" just always vote for the other candidate.

He has also said Ion Antonescu, Romania's de facto World War II leader who was sentenced to death for his part in Romania's Holocaust, and Corneliu Zelea Codreanu, the pre-World War II leader of the Iron Guard -- one of Europe's most violent anti-Semitic movements -- were national heroes.

He sounds nice...

Perhaps something to do with this...
In other interviews, Georgescu has said Romania was not ready to independently handle diplomacy and strategy and that its best chance lay with “Russian wisdom”. He has refused to explicitly say he supports Russia in its war on Ukraine.
I don't follow Romanian politics either. I just read the article.

UNFATHOMABLY BASED GEORGESCU

They called Trump pro Russia/Putin, so its obvious that they again are either misrepresenting a point somewhere, as per usual, or just completely missing the point. And if the BBC is against it, it is a save bet for me to be for it.

The Guardian, the premier provider of catnip for Woke retards in the UK is also shocked.

Lots of far right parties there.
It's almost as though some people had issues with the communist / socialist / Marxist regimes from the past.

You an expert in Romanian history today?
No, but I am pretty good at using google. But perhaps you can tell me why someone like this should be called a national hero?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ion_Antonescu

An atypical figure among Holocaust perpetrators, Antonescu enforced policies independently responsible for the deaths of as many as 400,000 people, most of them Bessarabian, Ukrainian and Romanian Jews, as well as Romanian Romani. The regime's complicity in the Holocaust combined pogroms and mass murders such as the Odessa massacre with ethnic cleansing, and systematic deportations to occupied Transnistria. The system in place was nevertheless characterized by singular inconsistencies, prioritizing plunder over killing, showing leniency toward most Jews in the Old Kingdom, and ultimately refusing to adopt the Final Solution. This was made possible by the fact that Romania, as a junior ally of Nazi Germany, was not occupied by the Wehrmacht and preserved a degree of political autonomy.

Sure.

Tell me why Nelson and Winnie Mandela are national heroes.
What, are suggesting that Winnie Mandela, and Ion Antonescu , should be considered national heroes even though both were responsible for the deaths of innocent people...?
