An Mpumalanga farmer has been arrested after allegedly knocking over two children with his car. He also allegedly assaulted a third child.

Louis Johannes Grobler, 42, appeared in the Ermelo Magistrate's Court on Wednesday, where he faces two counts of attempted murder and one of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Police spokesperson Colonel Donald Mdhluli said the children - aged 10 and 11 - were run over on Friday at around 14:00 on a farm in Ermelo.

Very unpleasant if that did happen... though it seems a bit odd and extreme to try and drive over such young kids. I do wonder what led up to that sort of action.

Quite likely, but it just strikes me as an odd setup to happen really.

Someone with anger management issues would have surfaced before trying to kill some kids with his car.

I am not trying to excuse his behaviour at all, I just find the situation very odd that's all.

The police's statement,

Media Statement
South African Police Service
Office of the Provincial Commissioner Mpumalanga

NELSPRUIT - A 41-year-old man is expected to appear at the Ermelo Magistrate's Court today following an incident in which the suspect allegedly ran over two children with his car as well as assaulted another. He is facing two counts of attempted murder as well as an assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. The children are aged 10, 11 and 13 respectively.

According to the report the suspect, Louis Johannes Grobler allegedly ran over the two minors and thereafter assaulted the third one after accusing them of theft. The incident is said to have occurred on Friday, 15 July 2022 around 14:00 at a certain farm in Ermelo. The matter was then reported to the police and after an investigation was done the man was immediately arrested the same afternoon.

The suspect reportedly had his first court appearance on Monday, 18 July 2022 where the matter was postponed to Wednesday, 20 July 2022 for a formal bail application.

The incident, which has spared some tensions in the community has also been strongly condemned by the Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela. "We urge members of the public not to take the law into their own hands but they should instead report crime to the authorities. Be as it may, for now let us allow the law to take its course as the matter is in the hands of court. We are thankful that police were able to make a swiftly arrest of the suspect. We hope that justice will be served for the three victims" said the General.

The Provincial Commissioner seems to have already made up his mind about the incident.

Captain Carla Prinsloo, Ermelo police spokesperson, said one of the children suffered a broken leg, another sustained minor injuries and was treated and discharged from hospital. Grobler is also said to have allegedly slapped a third child.

ONE CHILD IS IN HOSPITAL FIGHTING FOR HER LIFE

Family members of the children along with EFF and ANC members are currently protesting outside the Ermelo Magistrate’s Court.

A parent of one of the children spoke to the media outside court saying his child is fighting for her life in hospital and that he will insist that the farmer is denied bail.

“Last Friday, the children went to look for corn to feed the chickens. The farmer was done with farming for the day. He drove towards and them and knocked them over with his car. I was at work when I was informed. I went to check on the child and she was badly hurt.

“As the family we are hurt. Even during the last court appearance, one of the white farmers who I work for called me while I was in court to tell me that I was fired. We are hurt as a family because of these things that are happening.”

- Parent of one of the children

The tensions must be boiling.

She seems to say let the courts decide though. It is how the police make statements when a person is arrested, there are victims and perps and they always speak for the vics. What the vics did to attract the wrath of the low EQ farmer is neither here nor there if the farmer decided to help himself instead of reporting the crime.

What if the three victims don't get justice?
