FARRRRKKK - Any hack to disable Windows 10 restarting to install updates?

I'm absolutely sick to death of this retarded bs, I'll always have a zillion webpages open, busy working on something, walk away and what you know I come back and the computer is restarting to install updates. The install hours is useless, I use my computer at random times etc, I just don't want any automatic restarts, is that really to much to ask for?

Googled it a bit and seems there's no clear cut way to disable this, I'm on WIn 10 Pro and I don't mind reg editing etc, there must be a way or something I can install that will block auto restarts?

Haven't noticed any issues since I did that.

I just have Chrome remember my last session, so each time I close the browser (or installs restart it etc.) I start where I left off

O thats good. Haven't seen that option yet. I'll have a look when I get home. PC rarely restarts on its own during the day, but rather safe than sorry.

When new updates gets downloaded and installed (today is patch Tuesday) you'll get a popup and a entry under action center saying New updates downloaded and the device will automatically restart during quiet hours. When I click on that it takes me to this lovely screen:



From there I just select it to restart next week. Not so hard innit? Also Edge automatically opens up your last used tabs the next time you open it. Chrome has a similar setting but AFAIK it's not enabled by default...

Thanks but that's not the problem, I'd like to stop the restarts!
I'll have software open busy doing work etc, typically complex things multiple files open from all kinds of sources and then the computer restarts without warning.

Please helpful people, I appreciate all the tips but I'm not interested in anything else but stopping Windows OS automatically restarting to install updates.

2. Type "gpedit.msc"
3. Navigate to "Computer Configuration>Administrative Templates>Windows Components>Windows Update"

@OP I can offer you a few more insights that do not involve registry edits although those will also work.

(1) You could have a look at this link for all the ways other's have found to "control or manage" the Windows update process. Pick the one that suits you best. Not all work on all versions of Windows, but all do at the moment on WIN 10 Pro.
(2) This is what I have done




There is another one in the Group Policy that you could consider to use IF you are happy to allow some updates to be downloaded and installed if they do not require a restart.

Specifies whether Automatic Updates should automatically install certain updates that neither interrupt Windows services nor restart Windows.

If the status is set to Enabled, Automatic Updates will immediately install these updates once they are downloaded and ready to install.

If the status is set to Disabled, such updates will not be installed immediately.

Note: If the "Configure Automatic Updates" policy is disabled, this policy has no effect.

Accusing someone of being lazy because they post a question on an open forum is not helpful either. If you had read OPs post properly, you should have picked up that OP is quite familiar with WIN 10 and computers and more frustrated than anything else. And then hinting that he should "learn to search" Google is condescending.

That is how I have configured my daughters laptop. She does not have a permanent connection to the Internet and uses a 3G dongle when needed. BUT she moans like drain because every time she connects the PC tells her there are updates outstanding .....

Why install third party sw if there is a way in the OS to achieve the same result?

Also wondered that because almost all browsers can remember your open tabs but if you have hundreds of tabs open it is nice having an extension installed that regularly backups up the tab list.

I have had Firefox forget open tabs after a power outage and forget the hundreds of tabs open at the time.

The only reliable way is to disable automatic updates completely. If you only allow some updates, system becomes unstable at times and you will have to restart in the wrong time.

Indeed.

So far this is working well, prefer this method, I still get nagged but there's no chance of an automatic update.

Have had 2 updates so far, I just get a notification they are available and I download and install when I get a gap.

I've never had a problem with updates, with win7 it was set to restart for updates at 03h00 and it's still set the same (without any input from me that I can remember) on win10.

I've never had a restart happen that I didn't initiate outside of the set time...

Defender will update itself no matter what you set in gpe (50MB a time) and also can force restarts.

Okay please post what your settings are for info please.

Settings>update & security>Update settings>change active hours, as well as restart options.

OPs original request is based on the fact that he did NOT want ANY updates to download, or install at any time of the day. The only way then is to effectively block all update activity and hence why the gpe methods.

I also have a PC that is permanently in use 24/7 (service monitoring) and on that PC it is absolutely essential that updates are fully under my control.
