Defender will update itself no matter what you set in gpe (50MB a time) and also can force restarts.

?? Not with my settings in gpe. Defender updates are notified only and I install them when I want to. They do not run in the background, but what happens the nagging level with these updates is much more persistent than with others.

Updates for defender are downloaded anyway. On any failed updates (whether network error or policy settings) Windows panic and dowload again, wasting your data bundle.

I see as usual, mud slinging on the forum is the order of the day.

@OP I can offer you a few more insights that do not involve registry edits although those will also work.

(1) You could have a look at this link for all the ways other's have found to "control or manage" the Windows update process. Pick the one that suits you best. Not all work on all versions of Windows, but all do at the moment on WIN 10 Pro.
(2) This is what I have done

There is another one in the Group Policy that you could consider to use IF you are happy to allow some updates to be downloaded and installed if they do not require a restart.

Hope this helps.

If i say "yes" to highlighted option will it not auto restart?

Busy downloading a huge torrent when windows decides to restart at 02:00, FML.

Nope, with the settings given above defender sends an update notification but does not automatically download the update.

Correct. I have confirmed independently that Defender updates are also affected by the gpe settings and will not download and install if the setting for updates is option 2 notify for download and notify for install.

No unfortunately, not completely. But there are a few things I have found that reduce the intrusive nature of some of the updates etc that do go on everyday.

But to be specific, it is first necessary that you inform us as the which version of Windows 10 is installed on your device? Win 10 Home, Pro, Enterprise, Education?

The easiest way to see this is: Settings>System>scroll down to "About";

Where you will see Edition; Version; OS build; etc.

Next let us know how you log on to the device -- with a Local Account or with a MS account.

I'm using Pro.

For my personal use I'm not terribly fussed but I am doing semi-IT work for my company and the resetting of all the icons send many in the office into a state of confusion and I inevitably have to sort it out again or it just leads to them to start using the wrong things.

Everyone is logged on using domain accounts. Is their perhaps a group policy that can be implemented to stop it?

Okay, I will step back because I am not able to help with enterprise solutions. Home, single user yes.

No worries. I will speak to our contracted IT company who manage our server and see if they can do something about it.

Tried Windows Server 2016, setup all the things and a few hours later realize the services are down. Why the fug would you have automatic restarts for updates on a server, especially when there's no settings to disable it.
