Fat women stuck 22 in cave

Sure, during ice-age times, fat is an important sign of social success and suitability for a mate. You gonna tell me the same applies to the San ("bushmen") people in their mostly arid hotazell desert conditions?

I don't think we need to look as far back as the ice-ages for that "Fat = Social Success" effect . African Tribes STILL use it...or didn't anyone notice? Anyone ever seen a slim Tribal King ?

Oh and even right here in South Africa, you see people starving and living in shacks..yet all those women are FAT ..coincidence? I think not.

Only recently have i noticed a change in trend , most probably because of people having access to MTV and other american "brainwashing" stating that fat = bad.

In present day africa being fat is still considered a status symbol. For a man having a fat wife, or fat wives is particulalry pimpin! Being fat and having fat wives is a sign of wealth becuase from one's stature it is assumed that you are able to afford to eat as much as you like.

In hte past, and to some degree today, a large posterior on a woman was/is considered attractive, with even some younger african males, more influenced by the Western standard of beauty, still prefering slightly larger females.

It was only a matter of time before this happened. I know exactly where it must of happened.

I was amazed when I took the tour that they let some really old people take the full tour as well. It ended up taking almost twice the regular time having to wait to people to catch up.

They really need to be more strict in future about who it allowed to take the tours. It full tour really is pretty demanding.

Agree, but how do you tell someone they're too fat/old/unfit etc. to go on the tour :D?

"Hi there sir/maam, you're too fat to go on the tour!"

"Hey there old guy, you're too old to go in the cave. I suggest you go to the cafeteria where they're having a special on stewed prunes today"

DONE :)

But seriously...you should tell them. If someone is not fit to go on the tour, their lives could be at risk. Whats worse, feeling embarresed for a little while or feeling dead for a long time?

Well after this I think many a well rounded person will think twice before tackling the Cango Caves.

10 hours is hectic. Those caves are not the place you want to be trapped

The full story

Rescuers battled for ten hours at the Cango Caves near Oudtshoorn to free an overweight woman who became stuck in a narrow passage, trapping 23 other tourists in the caves.

"We were back in operation this morning (Tuesday)," said Hein Gerstner, manager of the Cango Caves.

There was no damage to the caves as no drilling or cutting was needed to rescue the woman who got stuck on Monday.

"There was permission granted to drill or to cut rock in a worse case scenario. Look, it would have been a last resort."

Gerstner said the woman was eventually freed using rock climbing equipment and liquid paraffin.

The woman slipped and fell and ended up wedged tight. "Her leg had folded under her and she could not stand up. If she had landed straight up on both legs there would have not been any trouble."

Twenty-three other people were trapped, unable to get past the stuck woman.

Gerstner said staff were used to people getting stuck at the Cango Caves.

"We believe what goes in, must come out again. People get stuck all the time — that's one of the unfortunate things that happen, it's part of the adventure."

The woman had been warned she was not suited for the route.

"She was told at the ticket office that she was too big to take part in the specific section. (But) her husband insisted she should take part in the adventure."

Gerstner said the guide also told the woman, when she reached the tunnels, that she should reconsider.

"The woman was extremely offended because she felt she was offended in person and laid a charge at management.

"But, she was too big. We will have to be a lot more stringent with people — to adhere to the criteria of difficulty of the routes," Gerstner said on Tuesday.

However, visitors became annoyed if stopped from entering the caves.

Monday's rescue operation involved a private ambulance service, the ambulance teams of Oudtshoorn and George, as well as a rescue helicopter carrying a rescue co-ordinator.

It was an expensive exercise, Gerstner said.

well I think they should measure people before they go into the caves and if they are over a certain weight or of cerain dimensions, then they should be required to "Lube Up"?!?!?!? The Cango Caves can come up wit their own product.. I would call it "Love Tunnel Lube" :)

I never got stuck ... so I missed the adventure then :(

Idiots. If you're too big, you're too big. Should just put up a sign that states that getting stuck confers all fiscal responsibility for the rescue onto the person stuck, and hefty fees will be charged...

People with heart conditions don't go on rollercoasters. This is a simple physical limitation.

Aye, in this case a hefty fine for the, well, hefty if caught out being stupid. And it's not for nothing that the bungee, climbing wall-type operators *require* you to sign a waiver before letting play with their toys. This would be easily fixed by requiring everyone to sign first; I mean, from what I've been reading about what the tour entails people should have at least a moderate level of fitness before trying it, much less being this kind of a risk!

But I've never been there, DO the 'Caves operation require waivers to be signed first?

One has to be really ‘dumb’ to even try and do it when you are of a larger frame. I did not want to go through the ‘experienced’ tour with my frame, just a year ago. I mean do not go and take on millions of hard tons of rock with a frame that is going to cause a problem.
Hope the person pays for the effort to have been proven obese and insisting it is an insult. Nature has strange ways to justify itself.
Very pleased the cave itself was not more damaged by the incident, than already done by stupid tourists. It is a very fascinating cave complex and something that leaves one in awe of how small we really are in the grand schemes of existence.

I just don't understand how she could continue to squeeze herself through the opening to the point where she actually became stuck . Surely you push a bit and then when it gets too tight you would stop and accept the fact that the tunnel of love is just not made for you?

Cara, whilst reading this, I completely forgot that we were talking about a fat chick in the Cango Caves. Can be a good intro for a steamy novel? :)

*I know, it's my dirty mind again.... :(

Natas, I can't stop laughing, very funny! :)

I go caving in the Sterkfontein area a lot and I have a friend who is a bit 'big boned'.
The running joke when he comes along is that he is at the front when we are going in and at the back when we are coming out. Just in case.
As for squeezing through small spaces - As long as my shoulders fit I've been able to go through most openings.
But people should have commons sense when doing something with such a degree of risk.

Apparently they (her husband and her) moaned about being discriminated against and insisted on going in, so,yeah, bill them for the costs.

Also maybe make a gate, and if you cant fit through it, no tour for you...
