Female warder stabbed to death in 3-hour prison hostage ordeal

A female warder at the Goedemoed prison in the Free State was stabbed to death when she and another female warder were held hostage for nearly three hours by an inmate on Friday afternoon, police confirmed.

Police said that according to available information, the prisoner, who was busy with cleaning duties, forced both women into an office and locked himself inside with them at around 3.30pm on Friday afternoon.

“After realising what was happening, the authorities at the centre mobilised the response teams including SAPS hostage negotiators who started negotiating the release of the officials for almost three hours, after which the prisoner surrendered.

“When the response teams comprising of correctional service officials and Tactical Response Team (TRT) members entered the office they discovered the body of a 35-year-old warder full of blood due to stab wounds sustained while held hostage,” police said.

Her 33-year-old colleague was still alive and treated for shock as she appeared to be traumatised, police added.
“The prisoner was rearrested and taken into custody. He will be charged with murder, and other charges might be added based on the outcomes of interviews with the surviving warder and the results of a post-mortem,” police said.

Former prisons staff to be rehired after deadly hostage drama at Free State prison

A deadly hostage situation at the Goedemoed Correctional Centre in the Free State has prompted the Department of Correctional Services (DCS) to re-employ former staff members to combat shortages.
Deputy Minister of Justice and Correctional Services, Thabang Makwetla, made the announcement on Wednesday after visiting the facility.
During the hostage situation last Friday, a prisoner allegedly stabbed a female prison guard to death, and it is believed that the person raped another guard.
News24 previously reported that the inmate eventually surrendered after a three-hour stand-off with a police negotiator.
When correctional services officials and the police's Tactical Response Team gained entry to the scene, they discovered the bloodied body of 35-year-old warder who had sustained multiple stab wounds.

In a statement, Makwetla announced that the department would invite interested and suitable former employees to apply for re-employment.

Inside the deadly Goedemoed Prison hostage situation: Security breaches, claims of brutal attacks and a planned killing

Several security breaches and the alleged involvement of at least one official may have led to an inmate killing a female warder and raping another at the Goedemoed Prison in the Free State earlier this year, according to the Judicial Inspectorate for Correctional Services (JICS).

The JICS compiled a report with findings, recommendations and requests after investigating the hostage incident on March 29.

The inmate was serving a life sentence for murder, rape, robbery and assault at the time and ostensibly had a history of internal disciplinary transgressions.

According to the report, he entered the offices of the unit where he was employed as a cleaner, locked the steel "grill" door to the offices with a padlock and barricaded the door with two tables.
