Hi

Fibre runs 250M from my house. It doesnt run up the road. I have tried multiple ISP's and providers and no one is keen on installing a line for me.
Saying i need to get 650+ people to sign up first.

Is there any alternative to getting a line installed? I am sure as hell not going to go and ask 2000 homes in the area to sign up. And that is best case the requirement to get 650 people to sign up.

Thx

I have the same problem. I was told they would need a contract to the value of R15 k to extends the fiber to my house. :(

You are referring to DFA fibre I presume? This is meant for carrier and business use, it's not feasible for a single home. Been covered a few times in this forum :).

650 is a bit excessive, but yeah, you need a few for them to make it worth their while. A 250m spur can cost close to R1million to build should the conditions be unfavourable. Even in the best case a spur like that would cost around R250k to build, so they definitely won't do it for just a single person. Give it time, it'll get there.

Why 250k?
The cable costs what? 4k.
Cable ties? R100
a ladder to put the fibre on the street poles? R1000
Guy splicing? minimal wage... R5

Thats a total of R5105
Cheap cheap

But yes. The piping is already there. All lines are underground currently in this area. They just need to pull the cable up.

What am i missing? Its already terminating in the exchange there on the corner. I already have lines running from said exchange into my house.

Just pull it in. EZ PZ

LOL. If only. Fiber is buried, overhead is not installed all that often anymore. Trenching, reinstating, hard rock and existing services can REALLY push up prices. That's excluding the DCP testing, DIT tests and reports, OTDR reports when the fibers are in (floated, by the way, not pulled), getting the correct people to open up manholes with active fibers, etc. etc. It's a mission, trust me.

PS: That's all to say if the fiber in your area is dedicated for home use. Most fiber running in the streets are for corporate clients like MTN, Vodacom, Neotel, etc. anyway, connecting cell towers and the lots. It'll come bud, give it some time... :p

PS: We've had fiber in the street for 8 months now, and there's not even an option to pre-order yet :/

Been told by a telkom tech that there is fibre running to one of their boxes a few meters from my house. You know the rest.

I think what infuriates me to no end is that companies like Vumatel and all others actually are so cheap they don't even do their own selling / marketing.

You want fibre? Sell our service to the rest of the people in your city!
Fck... not even just a street. The entire city is their requirement to service you.

So basically they expecting a client to sell the service on their behalf in order to make you an official client.

Fibre to the exchange means nothing for FTTH.

I know that. Also DFA have a cable running down a road from me just over a 100m away. They didnt even want to speak to me on the phone lol. Vox said I must check in 2 months time again, its 4 months fokol.

Openserve disagrees with you...

There's fibre across the road from my house, not DFA or back haul, actual FTTH. It just isn't being rolled out to my side of the road, THAT is frustration.

Openserve = Telkom. Overhead fiber is the exception, not the norm, all across the world. It is being used, but as I said, "not all that often anymore". The reason is because of the fluctuations and risks involved in running fiber overhead (not to mention a more expensive cable). Single lines to homes and in places where trenching is impossible (like the narrow streets in Cape Town, for example) overhead is still used from time to time, but in general a duct is buried depending on the type of infrastructure being installed and fiber is blown. That's the norm. Be it backbones or longhaul, that's the deal.

So on the trenching issues. Why are they not using directional drilling? It would take them 4 days to do a street with 1 machine. If it is even that much.

I mean with underground detection services, directional drilling... surely its a lot safer and quicker to use technology.

instead of 200 guys with shovels

Directional drilling is incredibly expensive. So expensive, in fact, that it's only signed off for the crossing of major roads or driveways where there is no chance to get by with trenching.

But is it really?

The machines cost R1.2Mil average. And pays itself off in 6 months if you roll out 42 areas. Which can be done with the machine and a little planning.

Yes. You also can only drill for so far. You can't do hundreds of meters in one go.
