Yes you can get a VOIP service from Telkom, You still pay for it, R200 per month.
Was told that I could transfer any telkom numbers I had.
Interesting! So it's fibre-based for sure ?
That would imply that Telkom themselves are starting to play in the retail-level VoIP arena.

Yup fibre based for sure. Not interested in a Telkom number so did not find out other details (phone model etc). Tech mentioned something about SIP in the exchange.

Looks like the contractors was at the pole, not a problem for fibre. Pity about the telephone lines :wtf:
2 customers is going to have some problems very soon. Look at the lower left of the picture, the support for the telephone lines are just hanging in the air, think the whole weight of the cable is now supported by the terminal blocks.

I ordered from WA. 100Mbps. Monument Park area Pretoria. This after my ADSL 10 line was damaged by the contractors installing fibre. 6 Faults logged (over 10 weeks) with telkom was unable to fix the issue... Life is too short to wait for telkom to fix ADSL.

13 May Place Fibre Order...
20 May Got Order number from WA after requesting feedback for second time.
25 May Got call from Telkom to schedule my install, they keep on referring to installing ADSL, I keep in correcting it as Fibre.
8 June Installation date. Details to follow...

Update: Telkom installed my Fibre 8 June. 2 Guys rocked up at around 11, they finished around 4pm. Fibre was installed running though the roof. Will post some more updates soon. First impressions: Very good! Guys where professional and knew what they were doing. Seem to recall the one was called Jermia.

Have not heard anything from WebAfrica about the wireless router... Time to follow up. Mean time I willl just connect PPoE to test the speed of light :)

Lucky b***er !

Still no contact from Telkom on my order at all :-(
Seems the "quality problems" in Faerie Glen are still being sorted out.

With/without conduit ?

It does take a suprising amount of time to get it installed and the pulling of the fibre cable is the quickest part.

Well my old analog line was running in some form of conduit along the wall... which they did not use.

Update: They installed it like any other phone line, from the pole straight to my roof. The guys got into the roof and ran the cable down in the corner (where I previously had another cable). Glued it into the corner all the way to the Fibre box.
The fibre box is connected to a Huawei GPON that seems to be in bridge mode.
Why would they give you something that is in bridge mode?
Downloaded the instruction manual and the device seems to support some very advanced networking options, guess they do not want anyone poking around (as there is no way tech support will be able to support this).

I connected it to my PC and setup a my (Afrihost) DSL details and connected.
Speedtest gave me 90/20.
Downloaded from a news server at 3MB/s with speeds spiking up to 6MB/s (Megabyte not megabit)

That does sound like a bit of a long-ish wait, but anyway ...

For a "wholesale" install (ie one ordered through a reseller, not through Telkom), the Telkom order number is unfortunately of limited use anyway, for two reasons:
  • As biena already pointed out, the "normal" Telkom helpline is clueless about fibre orders. You have to phone the fibre helpdesk, and even then, and even with the order number, it's a very hit-or-miss process. Most of the time they'll tell you that the order number doesn't exist. Occasionally you'll get a fairly clued-up operator who's able to track down the order some other way (maybe through physical address, or landline number (if there is one)).
  • WebAfrica have apparently been given a dedicated Telkom contact person/department, a SPOC (Single Point Of Contact), who deals with wholesale fibre orders. But it seems that they (WebAfrica) are either reluctant to actively follow up their own orders, or they don't get much more detailed feedback than we do.
Either way, you don't get much feedback. Your order drops into a black hole until Telkom makes contact with you - the classic "Don't call us, we'll call you".

Edit: Which area of Pretoria are you in, slvr ?

RSAWeb joins the FTTH-over-Telkom fray

As reported this morning in this MyBroadband article, RSAWeb have announced that they too will be offering ISP services over Telkom's FTTH infrastructure (among others).

Check out their package details and coverage tools here.

Getting feedback on a wholesale FTTH order from the Telkom Fibre Help Desk

Managed to speak to a Telkom consultant yesterday who was able to track down my WebAfrica FTTH order and give feedback on the progress (or rather, lack of progress) on it.

When you order FTTH service via another ISP (eg WebAfrica), the order comes to Telkom as a wholesale/business order and is allocated an order number that is different to the "normal" ones. It is still possible for a Telkom operator to locate your order and give feedback, however it needs to be the "right" operator - the "normal" operators can only "see" orders placed directly with Telkom and don't have access to the right systems to see wholesale orders.

If you happen to phone the Telkom Fibre Help Desk (080-000-7268) when it is unmanned or (more likely) overloaded, your call gets forwarded to a "normal" helpdesk and even though you have your (wholesale) Telkom order number, the operator will most likely tell you that your order doesn't exist.
You need to speak to a "proper" Fibre Help Desk operator, or else you will get nowhere (hint : one lady operator on the Fibre Help Desk who always seems to be able to get this right is Dineo).

As regards my own WebAfrica-over-Telkom FTTH install (now on Day 31 since ordering), it's still "on hold pending resolution of configuration problems on the Faerie Glen FTTH circuit".

This is how my 100Mbps Telkom fibre with WA is performing.

Well thats impressive upload for it :O But the download is lacking. I get similar download hits over wifi though Monday I noticed my line running at around half speed. I think everyone streaming E3 content is to blame for congestion of national bandwidth lol. Though even 50mb down was more than enough to stream content happily for me.

SO last night midnight I queued 15GB worth of photos to upload to my google drive... Only to find this morning at 8am that only 4.3GB has been completed. I am a bit disappointed with the performance of WebAfrica. On par wirh a VDSL

Any movement on your order? There is fibre in my road, neighbours already have lines installed. Yet for some reason Telkom is claiming that my stand/house does not have fibre available. On the coverage map my house has turned light purple from dark. The fibre clearly is on the pole that my copper comes from. Splicing box and all. Any ideas why Telkom is refusing to give us fibre?

I have seen some places where there is fibre infrastructure on one side of the road, but not the other. Telkom seem to have been very selective about where (or if) they cross the road (chicken?!). If you are in an area like that, you may be out of luck.

However, if there really is fibre on a pole in your back yard, then you're good to go - it's just a case of convincing the service provider (Telkom) to sell you their own product! :D
If you're having hassles with that, then I'd suggest phoning the Telkom Fibre Help Desk directly (number given in posts above) - be patient, it's not easy. If necessary, you can follow up with an email including a picture of the pole relative to your place. But call first - I haven't had any luck getting an answers to an unsolicited email direct to the Telkom FHD. Provided you get to speak to an actual FHD operator, they're quite clued up, so you should be OK.
If you're placing an order via another ISP (as opposed to direct with Telkom), you may have an easier time convincing them to provide service. Though ultimately, they also speak to a Telkom rep ...

As regards my own order - no luck yet, and it's now Day 42 since ordering. The FTTH "configuration problems" in Faerie Glen are still being resolved, apparently ...
