http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mauritius -
is an island nation off the coast of Africa in the southwest Indian Ocean, about 900 kilometers (560*mi) east of Madagascar. In addition to the island of Mauritius, the republic includes the islands of St. Brandon, Rodrigues and the Agalega Islands. Mauritius is part of the Mascarene Islands, with the French island of Réunion 200*km (125*mi) to the southwest and the island of Rodrigues 570*km to the East-northeast.

Maybe telkom should see this as a wake-up call, but I doubt it. They're still stuck with a 56k mentality in a fibre optic world

See it's not only Americans who have no knowledge of basic Geography... :D

Anyway haven't Mauritius always been quite far ahead of us in terms of broadband?

Redo the Comparisions

LuluPoo and IVY

Can I suggest that you actually do some work for a change, and redo your work comparing SA internet Usage/Status with Comparable countries.

Last time I checked, Mauritius had a much smaller market/population and was the same distance away from everyone else as South Africa. and, roughly at the same latitude. The fact, someone has actually bothered to connect such a small market to a fibre cable in the middle of a f*cking big Ocean miles from everyone else still boggle's my mind.

Oh Sorry, Fibre connectivity is actually quite cheap, but then LuluPoo and Ivy must know that by now.

I think we should start moving......haha
Last time I heard about Mauritius is that someone complained they only have a satellite or what as their international access point and it's something like 10mbps......I think I saw it from that digg post about SA's ADSL price 7000% above world average or something....

The rollout will require the deployment of some 2,200km of optical fibre
Assuming that one lives 500m from the nearest 'junction' or whatever the fibre optic equivalent is, a grand total of 4400 homes will get fibre optic access at a cost of US$318 million??

Don't worry guys, SA is on the list to get FTTH, we're at the bottom, right after the DRC, Zimbabwe and a frozen Hell...
