Fibre to the home is finally here

Methinks Hilton Tarrant needs to do more homework before being suckered by this single gated community pilot project. Telkom's pilot project is at least 10 times bigger... and in different cities, not just a single complex.

So Telkom started trialling VDSL 2 years ago and after all that time they now have 500 users.Don't know whether to laugh or cry.Just pathetic.

We are not going to see any real world impact from any of these companies for years to come.

What are Telkom's plans after the few pilot sites? Rumour has it, not much. It's highly cash-intensive, a bit like a mobile network. Just with even less chance of a return.

Also, Monagham Farm was actually deployed by iBurst back in 2009. LONG before the other players could even spell FTTH. ;)

It will be good to explore the reasons for this poor uptake. Last I heard over 400 000 MSAN ports have been commissioned and are ready to connect customers to.

My bet is that the main issue is pricing.

Another problem is that many of their customers don't know that they are in a VDSL area and this extends to their own customer facing staff, who know even less.

My thinking is that they will continue to target selective gated communities, business parks, high rise buildings, shopping malls, etc.

I am within 2 km of my exchange and the best they can give me is 6 mbps. They haven't even upgraded the exchange to ADSL2 yet.... never mind VDSL.
That is.... when the exchange is actually working. It is hopelessly oversubscribed and goes down several times a month.

Add to this that they will target the MSAN high revenue areas and replace the last mile copper with fibre as the MSAN allows for it.

That's due to them cherry-picking exchange areas to achieve a short term target, which caused a misalignment with the backhaul upgrade program.

Would like to see a follow up article from MYBB.I was told by TelkomZA that there are no plans to upgrade my suburb for at least another year which is seriously a joke considering we were one of the 1st beneficiaries of the 10MB upgrades yonks ago.Might as well wait for Vodacom or MTN as I seriously believe they will get here quicker than Telkom.Frustrating because I have the cash and want to pay!!

You live in a low income area! :p

I wish they would hurry up and cherry-pick this exchange. :(

If Telkom are not even dropping a VDSL enabled box near you then I seriously doubt whether ANY other operator will run fibre to your house.

Spend all their money on a property and cannot afford anything else! kekekeke

well here is actually the real bind that doesn't appear to be understood about infrastructure:
if you are putting down 5 bar on a piece of land it is well worth it to spend 100k to have a fibre connection between your house and the exchange if this will raise or preserve the value of your property and this realization is going to eventually creep in. No broadband internet at this house sorry not buying it at more than 800k ...

There seems to be an assumption that Telkom (in particular but not exclusively) must inexplicably bring infrastructure to everybody's assistance even though most of that infrastructure cannot be utilized by Telkom to generate high revenue.

Basically it is landowners rather than operators who have the most to cause to invest in the conduit infrastructure, even with a moderately low return on investment from whoever is utilizing the conduits there is a return and the benefits of improved access to opportunities for low cost internet access fall directly to the property.

Now of course a private individual cannot lay their own cable to exchange points but if the ECN licence holders (class and individual) were to target not just the revenue possibility but more importantly the appreciation of property values as a driver for taking up fiber the opportunities to get rollout increase dramatically.

This. I live in a very high net worth estate in Pretoria, the majority of the people here (600 stands) have now switched over to a WISP (us included) who have put up 2 high-sites in the estate. The installation cost is between R2k and R4k and monthly you're looking at another R2k-R3k for 100GB. But we have no other option, as Telkom flat out refuse to replace the ageing copper with new copper or fibre.

If we are prepared to pay R3k pm for 100GB, then I can guarantee fibre would have seen mass uptake. We decided to jump ship when one of the numerous Telkom techies we had fixing our line told me that Telkom is looking at a 2018 fibre roll-out.

So much for turning the company around...
