Fibre vs LTE

Why is fibre still so expensive?

I am currently on cell c lte with 50GB for R349pm. 100GB is available at R530pm. I get a good 10 to 30mbps (not everyone's experience I know) with about 40ms ping when gaming.

In comparison, Axxess capped fibre (on openserve) is R545 for 50GB / 10mbps, R665 for 50GB / 20mbps, R619 for 100GB / 10mbps and R739 for 100GB / 20mbps.

This makes fibre almost 1.5 to 2x more expensive than LTE with similar speed. Yes fibre gives much better latency and axxess throws in free uncapped night data.

Our neighbourhood got fibre last year (OpenServe) but I'm not sure its worth the extra RR. Its interesting that (four!) mobile networks have a large spread in broadband lte pricing (with cellc being one of the most cost effective solutions) but fibre providers aren't nearly as competitive. Collusion / Price fixing much?

You can't beat the reliability of Fibre.
Most people who use Fibre won't use Axxess, but rather an ISP that gives you Uncapped and Unshaped Internet with no Fair Use Policy.
If you don't use much Internet and don't mind the occasional congestion on the towers, you might as well stick on your LTE.

Probably have to switch your ISP , Cool ideas R499pm for 10Mbps uncapped on openserve.

Do you only openserve in your area ?

Yeah look, i am lucky that my tower isnt very congested (lots of baby boomers in my area). I think most people arent so lucky and get performance closer to a 10mbps line or worst.

Even so, fibre is still more expensive. I get that the physical infrastructure is more expensive with fibre compared to LTE, but why choke people artificially with line speed?Seems greedy. LTE networks give everyone max capacity, but then "self limit" with tower congestion.

I only used axxess to compare apples to apples. By capping fibre you typically trade line speed with cap at the same price point.

That said R499 for uncapped isnt bad. Just wish I could have 20mbps line for that price

Sadly yes, only openserve.
