They are within their rights to check if your finances are sound to sign a new lease. Peoples circumstances change. They could be liable to the owner if they do not verify that the tenant can afford the lease.

Sure, agree with that but that's done through background checks, first and last months rent upfront, calling previous landlords / employer.

I've never been asked for a payslip before.

.."this means your estate agent is legally obliged to obtain proof of your identity and proof of your address."

Is that not funny?

I do about 10 proof of residents a week, really frustrating :/

You would be if you wanted to rent from me, 3 months payslips and matching bank statements. I have recieved forged pay slips before now, hence the double check.

Hahaha Rawson hide it under the housing act.

I send them the act and ask me to point out where it said that.

They lied.

Your rent better be cheap then :)

as TB pointed out, it's fine to ask for proof of earnings \ stability of income but the pretext can't be legal requirements that have nothing to do with those. The relationship is already getting off on the wrong foot then.

Precisely that. And personally Just Letting are a bit suspect to start with....

I wouldn't trust them with financial info for all the tea in china
