Why South African driver's licence cards expire every five years

South Africa's driving licence cards are valid for five years because the material they were originally made from was believed to only last that long.

That is according to court documents filed by transport minister Fikile Mbalula responding to Afriforum's challenge against the driver's licence card expiry periods.

This makes things actually worse. Would have been better off with oops, we didn't think.

Please - my laminated gun licenses are over twenty years old.

Someone needs to drop this guy in a landfill and let him gain some first hand knowledge about how plastics degrade.

It is not only this guy; many governments are actively exploiting their own services provided to the public, most of which is compliance, to maximise revenue, and they will do their best to protect these streams whilst seeking to exploit it even more because they have 'mandates' to fill.

I do agree, Mbalula’s arguments are lazy, so much so that it is untested.

As per the known Tom Clancy book quote,

"I am a politician which means I am a liar and a crook. When I am not kissing babies I am stealing their lollypops."

The greatest problem remains that many perceive our government as corrupt, hence we have little to no faith in what they do with our hard-earned money and time, whether it is for services or for taxation purposes. The short validity of driver's licenses is but a drop of our concerns. For all manner of speak, the state is abusive, and the people are getting fed-up.

Yes, this is a rant.

As we are well aware the STUPID is strong in this one.

Laminated gun licenses are even older that 36 years.

I have my first of these license cards and it looks the same as the one I received in 2019.
I think the first one is from 1999.
Also still have laminated gun licenses from before then, all still perfect.
Then, still have my ID with my drivers license printed in it as well as old gun license glued in it.

The real story - the revenue stream we thought the 5 year expiry would provide turns out to be too low, we need new tenders to replace and supplement that.

The sad part - the fukkers will get away with this.

Wow what a lame excuse. Maybe brain limitation not the card
