My Datsun 1200 GX is in need of a new Master Brake Cylinder... and this is where it gets insane...
A new one, from Nissan is R3,400...
It's a pipe with a shaft, a few rubber seals and two plastic reservoirs! WTF are you paying for? Surely, even with import tax and shipping fees from Japan, it won't be that expensive.

But the fact remains that I still need one.
Is there a way to organize a genuine new Nissan part at a FAIR price?

I'm almost sure that part is serviceable, a few O rings and what not else.

So typical ... I'm sure the part is worth R 120 ... and some idiot added the carrying cost over the years way back from the 80s. Try googling ... you may be able to purchase from overseas.

Pretoria is full of places where you'll find the spares. There is a Wannenburg in Paul Kruger street which might have one if not they usually phone around to try and track one down.

Also you can try Van der Hoff rd. Plenty of places there.

Yellow pages, spare-parts companies just aren't around on the SA internet.

I'd still have a go at fixing that part though, cost like R10 for the O-rings.

If you don't get a after market Brake Master Cylinder replacement at Midas or Autozone you can take it to Clutch & Brake Supplies for reconditioning or re-sleeving if the old one is rusted or pitted.
If yours is not rusted or pitted you should get away with a replacement kit for a few R.

Well, it is the Master Brake Cylinder... I need quality.
Nissan will be the best, but for that price... I rather swim to Japan and steal one from the factory.
The problem I have with "pirate" parts, is what happened this weekend. The seals collapsed when I braked really hard. Now imagine if that had to happen @ 140km/h??

So, how do you find a quality part that's fairly priced?
The overseas option is a pretty good one. How do I go about it? Where do I look?

...And, just for Pitbull.. NO! I'm not selling my GX! It's awesome!

Foozeball, please do yourself a favour and listen to the only sensible suggestion of the day, by Stokstert!

I have just had clutch and brake mastercylinders redone for my wolseley 6/110 at a similar place in Pinetown. These guys do this type of job every day. Only an idiot would try and buy the part new, if they didn't know about reconditioners.
Once redone, they are probably better than new, because they have literally been hand built from scratch!
