An eagle-eyed planespotter has snapped the first image of South African Airways’’ very first A350 in Singapore today. Emerging from the paint shop in full SAA livery, the new aircraft looks set to join the fleet in a matter of days. It will be deployed on the Johannesburg to New York route, replacing an A340.

The first A350 for South African Airways was spotted in Singapore today in its full SAA colors. While most of the livery remains the same as the rest of the fleet, the A350 appears to have adopted larger ‘billboard’ style titles on the sides. This is a trend we’ve seen in a few airlines this year, notably United.

This first A350 will be registered ZS-SDC. By the looks of it, it should be ready to deliver to SAA within a matter of days. Some commenters have indicated they expect it to land in South Africa on Thursday, but this is unconfirmed by the airline.
Given its current financial state, the A350 might seem like a bit of a strange investment for SAA. However, at this stage, the airline is only leasing these aircraft, in a bid to reduce their use of the gas-guzzling A340. This first A350 will replace an A340 on the Johannesburg to New York JFK service.

There is some conflicting information about exactly how many A350s SAA has signed up to lease. Back in the summer, it was confirmed that two A350s originally destined for Air Mauritius would be reconfigured for SAA as part of its fleet renewal. The tail fins on these aircraft were already in Air Mauritius colors and will be repainted for SAA.

Presumably it's a 900?

I'm looking forward to my first flight on a 350 in 3 weeks, on Qatar Airways, via Doha to DFW.

Nice aircraft, but a shame I will not fly SAA under any circumstances anywhere. I'd much rather board an old 767 Balkan Air plane and fly via Bulgaria than hopping onto SAA.

Man, I envy you - make sure to come back here and share your experience/thoughts.
It has a high bar to meet. I'm nudging a million miles in long haul, and my best ever experience - even better than BA 1st Class in the 90s - is on a Dreamliner.

I would not support them either, corruption, mismanagement, burden on taxpayer, high prices. They should be shut down.

The taxpayer is paying for every person flying with saa. It's also anti competitive practice when competing with other airlines that don't get funded by taxpayers.

Nobody should support saa.

Because I know how gambling and odds work. While the odds will always be against you, there are ways to increase your chances of winning.
If you're referring to safety, SAA have a fairly adequate safety record and capable operational staff.

If I boycott everything (and not just SAA) based on your criteria, I am not sure if I will survive.

Granted but many consumers don't have that luxury. They choose the cheapest flight available.

See @ponder post above in addition to my own personal safety concerns.
That's not what you said though, you're just using his points to justify yours.

Their safety record is pretty good compared to most airlines around the world. That's one thing you can't hold against them...

If you are basing their safety record on number of incidents or plane crashes, then I am afraid you are a bad gambler my friend and likely to be one their future victims. It is just a matter of time.

SAA is not the cheapest by a long shot.

If you wanna fly jhb-jfk for example your options are limited and i can understand going saa

So that is why quite a number of their planes got grounded because certain maintenance functions weren't done?

For me it's not even about the price or options, although it is to some extent.

It's also about the time. If I have to spend 12 hours waiting for a connecting flight, vs 2 hours (or even direct) on SAA, then I'm going with SAA. I'm happy to sacrifice price in the name of making a point against corruption etc. but not my time...
