South Africa launching new smart city

The first phase of a smart city development in Shongweni, outside of Durban, is set to launch today, Thursday, 27 March 2025.

According to a Newzroom Afrika report, the smart city development, dubbed Westown, is expected to attract around R15 billion in private-sector investment over the next 10 to 15 years and create more than 23,000 jobs.

What is the definition of Smart here? because this just looks like what I'd call a normal city, perhaps with some Estate-style elements? Or is it smart because it's new? I don't really think of detecting water leaks or electrical faults as smart, but perhaps I'm not clear..

Latest Smart City? That implies we already have smart cities...

I think I figured it out, Smart Cities work similar to SA's National Matric Certificate, 30% is good enough for a pass. So 30% roads left, 30% electricity left, 30% water left, 30% sewerage working, 30% hospital left, etc, etc. all means we have many, many, many 'Smart Cities'.

no it includes IOU's, flying ships, vibranium, excuses, dancing, burning and potholes,

why would you expect anything else? these people can barely use a ATM
hence the long lines come payday.
My worst is the geriatrics paying their TV licences, municipal bills (water / electricity / rates) or other accounts at the tills in supermarkets every month-end (once they get their SASSA benefits) whilst all the frozen food is defrosting in your trolley as you wait interminably for them to complete their multiple transactions - FFS! - go to the Cigarette / Lotto kiosk instead & pay them there!

/rant over

all that happens in the "dumb cities" we have right now anyway
