Fix slow ADSL speeds yourself – Telkom explains how

Telkom has published a self-diagnosis guide to help consumers to fix their own ADSL internet and landline problems

How is this news ?

People have been getting the exact advice in the article, and more, for decades on MyBB.

If the people on MyBB cannot help you, your exchange is bogged down, and if you cannot cope with the bad speeds the only solution is to cancel your line and look at 3G.

This is Africa, where 3G is anything between 3 - 6 times faster than what the fastest fixed residential line can do.

...."doing a speed test" :) I should have thought about that earlier , because it fix your slow connection every time.

Surely it can't be that tough to create a portal to see your own exchange current load stats? Pretty easy to secure against other users, just allow the IPs connected via that exchange to see the stats.

and the irony of it all is that the referenced PDF is taking ages to download on my line
..edit. That PDF download took me over a minute to get on a 4Mbps Telkom ISP line

Need to take into account that not everyone has the same knowledge when it comes to basic technical issues, this document is a good idea for those novice users

Check that your PC network settings are still the same. Uninstall any new software or firewall. If you are unsure of what has been installed, restore your computer to a previous stage when the Internet was working

Excellent set of troubleshooting steps - I shall print them using large fonts and give them to my grandmother ;-)

Do not forget the part where you are told to uninstall your firewall and thus open your pc to the world.

In part two you will be told to install an antivirus and in part three you will be told to re-install your firewall.
