Fiber is still more expensive than VDSL so doubt it will be soon.

Well, fiberhoods is rolling out here.
Currently I pay about R870 for a 10Mbps line (inc. voice) + 150GB. If I moved over to frogfoot I'd pay R500pm inclusive of line install, uncapped and wireless modem for 10/10.
So yeah, cheaper.

We've been hearing this for years but MTN and Vodacom has barely responded.

Not really, it's cheaper as long as you don't go for OpenServe/MTN/Vodacom/CellC.
You mean OpenServe/MTN/Vodacom/Vumatel? Cell C doesn't have fibre.

Vumatel is cheaper than ADSL
