Oh please. Stop making it sound as if we're in the middle of a war or something. Yes, crime is bad, but not THAT bad. I read the murder statistics a while ago for last year in the Western Cape. I think there was one murder in Durbanville, but apart from that, all the other murders was in black areas like Langa, Mitchells Plain etc.

Obviously there are other types of crime in other areas as well, but it's not that bad as you make it out to be. Nobody I know have been mugged with a gun on the way to the shops. Of course it happens, but it's not such a common thing as you imply. And with the financial status of other countries, I'm glad to be living in South Africa!
So it's in the black areas so that's OK?!?
Look, the police are not telling you half the story. Only last week we heard about Lansdowne Police suspended/fired for faking stats. We are in a war, but the government is acting like it's business as usual. We need to take extraordinary measures in times like these.

God help old people in this hell hole. Besides crime I dread being old and frail here!

Imagine being without a decent pension or medical aid??

Methinks you aint been out of the house in a looooooooong while. Nowadays its easier to count the people who have not been affected by crime than those that have. Where do you live anyway? Not Johannesburg thats for sure.

Umm I think the Swiss banks pretty much are the Eastern European Banks. Why do you think the Eastern European countries have not had to announce big bailout plans?.

Actually Hungary and Romania have asked the IMF for a lot of money. As for other Eastern European countries the economy there is actually growing - Poland according to the World Bank is growing at 2% which is conservative compared to what the government there predicted. The Swiss banks did not
have that many loans in central European states and they certainly aren't the only investors other there nor are the banks there not locally owned either.
In short, not sure where you get your information from but it's incorrect.

As for Hungary and Romania, the banks in trouble there are the Greek, Italian and Austrian banks.

If anything the Swiss Banks may be in trouble because of buying of US debt, investments in Iceland as well as Spain. Western Europe is more in trouble in this crisis.

But it becomes THAT bad the moment it happens to YOU.

And it's certainly more likely to happen to you in South Africa. You can't blame people for wanting to get away from that.

Just like the pensioners suffered in Zim 1.0 - their pension and any other investments became worthless, which I forsee happening here if we continue to go with the likes of the ANC and their chief AIDS shower boy Zuma.

The UK is putting together an assistance package for elderly British subjects still in Zim.

You got your head in the sand mate!!! 54murders per day in SA. Imagine if each of them was on the news every night, with follow up to the court cases and prosecutions etc...New24.com would not have enough dataspace. You will never be able to keep up. That implies to me "war zone" A few "relatively" safe suburbs, compared to thousands of unsafe suburbs does not imply that SA is not a war zone. I am sure there are some "relatively" safe areas in Iraq too.

Seems like you suffering from boiled frog syndrome.

PS: 14 Murders in Durbanville in 2008, 24 rapes, and 123 cases of Assault with the intent to inflict grievous bodily harm. Yip, in Durbanville.

SA IS A WAR ZONE!!!! Not really debatable either!!!:confused::confused:

Retro, what rock are you living under or are you blind? Sorry, no offence intended but you seem to be living a very sheltered life.

I work in Bryanston, JHB and to give you a few examples of crime that I personally have been close to:
- A collegues child was mugged 2 weeks ago walking home from school. A primary school child, 10 years old, mugged walking home from school!!!!!! Come on!
- My house has been robbed twice in the last 2 years. Luckily I wasn't there at the time.
- A friend of mine is a kick boxing instructor and was mugged at gun point after one of his classes. He lives in a suposedly nice area. One of his students was shot in the leg during the incident.

And the list can go on if you would like more examples. None of these happened in dodgy areas.

Open your eyes. Violent, senseless crime is HUGE in South Africa. My biggest pet peeve if you can call it that is when someone sais to a fellow South African that they are lucky to be alive after being mugged, robbed, attacked etc. What a load of $#@!. Why must we be lucky we're alive. The person just got mugged and they must be thankful? It has become such a common occurance here that this kind of comment has become common.

WTF dude... We've just had 2 armed robberies in the last 3 months at our complex (a place I've felt completely safe at for more than 2 years now.)
Unfortunately our flat (one of 60) is among the only ones with no security gates etc...so I'm basically now lying in bed every night, waiting for the inevitable to happen. Don't tell me people are overreacting.

The best gauge is people who have been out the country for just a year or two.

They all say: "Well it's ok to come back for a holiday......but....."

A lot of them have to come back as their european work visa's have expired.

Absolutely none of my friends who have left SA want to return.

As much as people want to leave they have to realise they are entering an arena facing a global financial crises. I've recently heard of 3 friends coming back to South Africa because they have become redundant due to European countries protecting the jobs of nationals and have subsequently learned of work colleague's children also returning home due to the same reason. I believe we should stand fast and make the most of what this country has to offer, fill the skill gaps and vote a competent party into power. We can make this work bar what some might think.

Theres always two sides to the story. Its true that the financial crisis is having an impact in finding jobs overseas but i've also heard that those south africans who already had jobs going into the crisis were kept and the locals let go because of our better work ethic.
