Hi All

I am planning to go to Thailand (Phuket and Koh Phi Phi) in March 2014. I have read many comment here that I should DIY my trip as it works out cheaper that going with a Travel Agent.

So can someone give me tips/advice one how to book my flights. I am looking to a cheap option from JHB to Bangkok, dubai, Doah etc. (not sure where please advice)

Which airline?

I know once I am in Asia I can user Asia Air to book to Phuket.

We 2 adults and 2 kids (7,8)

Thai flies direct and will probably be better value than a connecting flight which will add hours to your trip. Boeing 777 is a nice plane. Service is good. Just arrange a transfer ahead of time from the arrival airport to your hotel, otherwise the cab drivers will probably work out a lot more.

Also ensure that you have adequate travel insurance. IIRC, I get it free by having discovery medical aid, but if not, do not travel without it.

your first port of call should be how long to you wanna travel. You can pay through your nose for direct flights or you can have 2 stops (blooody mission, trust me) and pay A LOT less.

tip : sort by travel time, not by stops. Often you get cheap flights with 2 stops, with excellent total travel time for a excellent price. Win all around.

I know of quite a few people who went to Thailand this Xmas and all went Air Ethiopia. Etihad was about the same or a bit cheaper but long transit times, whereas Ethiopia has decent flight times and short transit times.

And yeh, its a decent airline.

Bangkok air have cheap internal flights, so my daughter who is there, is flying to Bangkok, Phuket and Koh Samui

I'm also going to be in those cities in March 2014.

CPT -> Dubai -> Phuket (Emirates)
Phuket -> Bangkok (Air Asia)
Bangkok -> Dubai -> CPT (Emirates)

About 13k per person. Its a bit more expensive as it isnt a simple return journey as we fly out from Bangkok and stop over in Dubai for 3 days.

Ethiopian fly the new 787 Dreamliner to and from Joburg. Personally I would choose them just to fly on it. :) :) :)

If you pay for your flights with FNB credit card you also get free travel insurance.
