Flipboard for Android Is (Unofficially) Available, Looks Just As Great As Its iOS Sib

Android users eager to get their hands on Flipboard, the beautiful, tile-based digital "magazine" we all know and love were told the app would launch exclusive to the Samsung Galaxy S III when it hits markets later this month. Now, thanks to one enterprising member over at the XDA forums, an unofficial build of Flipboard for Android is available to all, and it looks great.
Waiting for end of the month (or later, depending on the launch of the Samsung Galaxy S III) didn't sit well with XDA forum member Valcho, and considering he had an SGS III "lying around," he decided to extract the APK and share it with the world. You can grab it at the link below.

If you're familiar with Flipboard for the iPhone and iPad, the Android version works the same way, but if not, it's easy to use. When the app launches, you can build your "magazine" based on your interest or log in to your Flipboard account if you already have one on another device to pull down your stories, linked social networks, and preferences. Swipe your fingers from bottom to top to move from article to article, and left to right to go from page to page inside an article. Even if you don't have an account, you can still enjoy the pre-loaded top stories and "cover stories" section, populated with popular articles from around the web.

I had some trouble running the app on my rooted OG Droid running MIUI—it installed fine, but I was presented with an error that my device didn't meet the minimum requirements for Flipboard to run. When I tried it on my Droid Bionic however, the app worked like a charm. Give it a try yourself, and let us know how it works on your device and what you think of the Android version of Flipboard in the comments below.

Dammit... beaten again :(

Edit: And its crap!!!
Thanx but I'll keep to Currents

Tried currents, completely useless, never ever updates any of my feeds, had it off my phone for months before giving it a try and still nothing. Delete feeds from google and its still in currents days later, add feeds to google and they never appear in currents. That app was a massive google fail.

You referring to the old one or how long ago did you test it?
Yes I had issues with the older US Only version, but since its opened for international I had none of those problems.

Tried it when it went int, think lifehacker or mashable announced it. Was v 1.1 and ya terrible. Downloaded it now again, will check after i finish eating.

Currents loked good, just pretty useless if its not workin, still find flipboard to have a nicer ui for most of it. The intergration with EVERYTHING is nice too, got fb, twitter, instagram, timblr, reader all nicely in one place so its likely a keeper, currents cant do that.

Aaah I guess that is why I am not a fan of Flipboard.

Dont use those integrations, plus I prefer the clean UI of Currents to the page crap from Flipboard even on iOS, oh and on that note the Android version is no where near the iOS version, hell it almost look like a "Made in China" cheap knock off of the real thing.

Ok dont have my note yet, apparently flipboard is officially only being released for the S3, the leak came from an S3 owner.

As for currents, exactly the same problem, I have 16 feeds, its reading 10, 1 of which is not even mine.

My two favorites are Flipboard and Zite -- good to see they both on Android (btw Flipboard is good at the bug stuff, so sure it will stabilize quickly)

Btw I tried currents, didn't like it, same with pulse... but always good to see the App variety narrowing more between Android and iOS.

Sad if true; nevertheless sure the if true the exclusivity won't be for long...

You mean as in Google reader feeds or Current subscription feeds?

On Subs I have 11
on Reader I have 14

So I dont know if its because of the number of subs or something is up with your account as I have none of the issues you are mentioning.

All my feeds r with greader, nothing currents specific. Maybe its the nexus s or cyanogen rom. Either way its not working for me, and flipboard could tone own the fancy ui, but for me the features for outshine currents, I would stick with it even if currents did work.

Hmm, portrait only, still needs some work. I'm starting to warm to currents slowly just wish they had better news sources.

This. Flipping back is major buggy, and I've had at least one random crash while using it.

The same happened with initial versions of Flipboard and Zite on iOS... The fact that they there, means there is a commitment to make it work; give it time.

Good to see that Zite and Flipboard have made their way onto Android. I can't imagine reading my news any other way.

Agreed, not saying it's totally useless, just that it's clear why it isn't officially available yet.

I think we will have to wait a while before our problems are sorted, you see its not really released for Android but for Samsung Galaxy S3, the fact that some S3 owner dumped an apk doesn't automatically mean we will get it or fixes for that matter.

You have to actually wonder how much did Samsung pay the devs for Flipboard. I can not imagine this happening without some money exchanging hands. Flipboard is almost like ancient news in the iOS community, if they where aiming for Android they would have done it ages ago.

Nice find.
Preference is still Pulse and Currents. Will give it a bit of time though.
