on Delta it was 2 bags of 23kg each and one carry on bag and one personal item.

On TransAtlantic flights it's always two bags of 23kg each (every airline) and one piece of handluggage excluding laptop or handbag.

I've dealt with some European airlines when travelling with video equipment and they allowed over 40kg additional equipment for free. You must notify beforehand.
I also know Emirates allow this and they do have additional allowances for golf/sport equipment - over your given allowance.

Carry on is actually limitless - because one could in theory buy lots at DUTY FREE shops, airlines have no right to restrict carry on, strictly speaking.

Carry on has become stricter. It used to be convenient to pack all the heavy stuff in a small knapsack, but not any more. They have weight and size limits. The occasional duty free plastic carrier holding a bottle of whiskey may be overlooked.
