I wonder if Steve was in on it!

But seriously, this kind of crap really affects their business badly.

We had three break in attempts at our business over the holidays (so far), the wife and I had to drive out at 2am one night to go fetch the company truck cos they were trying to steal it.

criminals rule this country.

I know FNB will never release it. But I'm sure every single box in the safe room was not targeted?

Did the robbers just randomly bash boxes and make off with it (unlikely) They MUST have had some inside info, maybe not knowing the exact contents but a tip off to say owner of xyz box drives a certain car, dresses a certain way and surely has high value items, or deposited something bulky, or paperwork, etc.

30 FNB safety deposit boxes stolen on New Year's Day

Johannesburg - FNB customers had to face yet another unfortunate situation after R1.7 million and valuables kept in safety deposit boxes were stolen.

Thirty safety deposit boxes were stolen at an FNB branch in Parktown, Johannesburg on January 1.

This is not the first time. In December robbers overpowered a security guard and stole just over 250 deposit boxes. Just days later, police found about 250 deposit boxes in a veld near the FNB Stadium in Nasrec with some just containing documents in them.

FNB faces anger over safety deposit box heist

Lwazi Stuurman, FNB spokesperson said the bank was unable to give further details on the issue from the incident at the Parktown branch due to police investigations currently under way.

Stuurman, however could not say if both the robberies were related.

“At this stage, there is no indication that the Parktown branch burglary is related to the Randburg one; however we are working closely with the South African Police Services and the Organised Crime Unit to thoroughly investigate the incidents,” said Stuurman.

Can one argue for a refund on secure deposit box fees even if you don't have a box at one of the affected branches since it is becoming clear that you have not been getting what you paid for?

Lol another one

"First National Bank has been hit by a second bank heist in as many months, with the SAPS reporting that R1.7 million has been stolen from the bank’s branch in Parktown, EWN reports."

OK, so their physical security is seriously lax.

“Impacted FNB customers will be notified individually via the contact details supplied to the Bank, once the relevant law enforcement authorities have completed their preliminary investigation."
Huh? I read 1.7 million was stolen. Is that not cash? How can it affect some customers and not others?
Huh?

Several victims have also expressed anger about a letter they received from the manager of the FNB Randburg branch‚ which referred to "our recent telephone call to you … confirming that a burglary occurred".

They say bank staff did not called them to inform them of the burglary.

"I heard about it on the radio and called the Randburg branch for more information‚" said James Miles.

"We read about (the heist)‚ phoned and then went in‚" said a woman named only as Nicole on the victims’ WhatsApp group. "(The manager) gave us a letter confirming their call to us. I have written to them disputing this."

Asked to respond‚ FNB said: "Nothing further to add."
More lying from FNB, we were just talking about this "despite out previous communication to you" when this is the first communication that SA companies love to pull...

It's not about 'stuff happening', it's about how you react when stuff happens, and this reaction is worrying.

FNB Heist: Authorities question potential suspects

JOHANNESBURG – First National Bank (FNB) has confirmed that law enforcement authorities are in the process of questioning potential suspects believed to be linked to the robbery at their Parktown branch during the festive period.

The bank was rocked by two heists within a two-week period, with the first taking place at the Randburg branch where over 300 safety deposit boxes were taken.

FNB customers have expressed their anger at how the institution has handled the matter, including being notified late about having their boxes taken from the branch.

The bank says it could only notify its Randburg branch customers of their safety deposit boxes once police had completed their preliminary investigations causing a delay.

A Randburg FNB user says he has been asked to make a list of items stolen from his box.

FNB CEO: Three employees suspected of links to Parktown heist

JOHANNESBURG - FNB CEO Jacques Celliers says early findings of an internal investigation into a heist at their Parktown branch has led to the suspension of three employees believed to be linked to the crime.

On New Year’s Eve an unknown number of men held up security and drilled through a wall to access the vaults making off with nearly R2 million and 48 safety deposit boxes.

Two weeks earlier, a similar modus operandi was used to rob the Randburg branch where over 300 safety boxes were stolen.

The bank says it will assist and facilitate customers in with their insurance claims, but it's unclear what will happen to those who had not covered their valuables.

FNB to reimburse victims of safety deposit box thefts

Johannesburg – First National Bank (FNB) confirmed on Thursday that it was in the process of reimbursing customers impacted by loss of valuables at its branches.

This comes after the bank experienced break-ins and robberies at its Randburg, Parktown and Sunnypark branches in Gauteng, resulting in thousands of safety deposit boxes containing millions of rand worth of valuables being stolen.

The bank said it would reimburse customers for reasonable costs incurred for replacement of marriage certificates, identity documents, birth certificates and passports.

In a statement, FNB chief executive Jacques Celliers said the bank deeply regretted the impact of these criminal incidents.

Celliers said FNB would continue to assist by reimbursing impacted customers for insurance excess payments where customers submitted successful claims to their insurance companies.

"In addition, FNB will, despite not being legally obliged to do so, take a further step to help impacted customers by initiating settlement discussions with uninsured Randburg, Parktown and Sunnypark customers who had their safety deposit boxes tampered with," Celliers said.
