They had R200 cases last I looked @ ZAstore online.

@R700, thats at least a 1400% markup..
They didn't have any at that price point for the 15" when I looked (online and in store).

Anyhow - all my existing cases are for 13" models so I bit the bullet. I saved £380 off the UK high street price so I'm not complaining. I even took Applecare, for the first time ever, and still ended up ahead of the game :)

I'm torn between purchasing a Macbook Pro 13" or waiting for the 12" Macbook Air Retina that should be releasing in the 2nd quarter of this year.

Definitely has to be Retina thou. Coding and editing images on 1366*768 is just painful.

The 12" Retina is not confirmed to even yet be in the works. Even if it is, it would not be comparable to a Macbook Pro, and would be closer to a Chromebook than even the current Airs.

Depends on your usage I suppose.

Never had that problem myself.

If the scuttlebutt is anything to go by peripherals are going to be even more problematic than my recent firewire woes - http://www.engadget.com/2015/01/06/12-inch-macbook-air-leak/

More or less confirmed by trusted sources: http://9to5mac.com/2015/01/06/macbook-air-12-inch-redesign/

Bit worried about the Broadwell Core M processors. Based on Lenovo's implementation they are a bit lackluster. Coupled with the fact that the new Macbook Air Retina is purported to be fanless, I'm worried about aggressive thermal management.

Will just have to wait for reviews once released.

Then again, I have faith in Apple :)

Hi all - this might have been answered before - but just want to check >> there's no way one can get FNB to provide a BTO version, and purchase it through them? Anyone tried?

Looking at a 15" - but cannot see myself managing with a 256GB drive - would prefer a 512GB.

Doubt it. Call and ask the iStore?

And do let us know.

I asked, they don't.

May have changed though since I asked (mid last year).

At least the drive is upgradable (well replaceable), unlike most of the other components.
Yes, I can definitely get spare drives at my whim, although they are a bit $$.

What did you end up buying? Macbook Pro from the UK? Who'd you purchase it from?

I would say 13" rMBP. Going by the current Air and 13" rMBP, there's hardly any difference in size, but a huge difference in performance for not that much more money.

So how I remember reading that you can get your device straight from the iStore through FNB. Any idea whats the process?

Emailed my Banker, lets see what she says.

Really would prefer to stay on the fee saver option...

Hi guys,

So after this thread (http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=667505), I'm leaning towards actually not getting a PC laptop but a Mac. Specifically the Macbook Pro retina 15" that's available on FNB deal ( MGXA2 here: http://myistore.co.za/fnbdeals/).

I know it'll work out costing me slightly more in the end due to the monthly costs adding up but I feel I can afford it that way as opposed to buying it cash. It'll cost R 28 680 at the end of 24 months vs R 26 499 if paying upfront...

The "barrage" of questions:
Any advice?
Has anyone here bought a Macbook via the FNB deal?
Is it a good deal?
How's the specs (2.2ghz i7, 16gb ram, 256gb SSD, Iris Pro Graphics)?

Thanks in advance,

What level reward are you with ebucks?

Yes, but again, it would be lower spec than even the current Macbook Airs, and be more akin to a Chromebook. Which would be cool, but not something I would want for my usage. If the price matches the lower spec point, it could be a winner in the lower cost market.

Ah I see. Were you traveling there or did you order it from SA and having it shipped?
Had family coming down so I reserved it and they picked it up from the terminal.

Reading my comment over it looks like I never did English at school, that's embarrassing, lol...

Lucky you! Seems a couple thousand rand cheaper there than what it goes for here... No problems with customs?
