FNB issues warning over screen scraping in South Africa

FNB has cautioned South African online shoppers against entering their online banking details into third-party websites.

This warning is particularly pertinent ahead of Black Friday, which will see many South Africans purchasing products online.

Android apps containing malware that screen scrape when you enter your card details on shopping apps seems like a real issue.

My dad got a notice on Standard bank app about it. The app also does not load if you have any apps with screen overlay enabled. It will force you to remove the screen overlay permission from those apps first before you can do banking.

I tried using it at a retailer (POS) and the cashier just gave me a blank stare. But it works well with etailers that just need the card number and CVV to process a transaction

Card details I can understand, but login details?

Screen overlay sounds like a terrible permission to grant!

I think that is where the confusion arises. Aggregators apps are the only ones I can think of where bank account logins would have to be provided.
