If you are an FNB Platinum card holder - you will want to read this.

FNB have from the 1st July very quietly penalised all their Platinum card holders big time by capping the amount of Ebucks you are able to earn!

Prior to July 2012 - you earned ebucks on all your spend. Now you only earn ebucks on your spend upto a maximum of R20k.

e.g. previously if you spent R100k = ebucks earned 10 000 ebucks ... now spend R100k = ebucks earned 2000 !

This is completely illogical and makes no sense. Why would FNB want to dissuade customers from spending on their FNB Platinum card ? Surely the key object is to encourage spend on the card ? Once you have spent over R20k on the card – FNB no longer provides any incentive or reward to use the card.

This is simply bizarre. FNB only earns money when the customer spends on the card …

Why anyone would now choose to use their FNB Platinum card when instead you could choose to use a Standard Bank Mastercard which has no earning caps ( 1 BA mile for every R7.50 spent ) or Amex Platinum with their Membership Rewards … which better still incentivises customers to spend in order earn MORE membership rewards with greater earn ratios !

I am unaware of any “incentive” program offered by the major credit card companies which discourages you from spending on the card by imposing limits on your rewards earning ability.

This “enhancement” comes across as complete slap in the face to Platinum cardholders.

It clearly has not been thought out … it hurts customers and hurts FNB when people opt to use another card instead.

If you are a FNB Platinum cardholder - let FNB know what you think about this 'new enhancement' - rbjacobs@fnb.co.za / Wealthcard@fnb.co.za ... and maybe they'll come to their senses.

Its a bit annoying... but I'd imagine if you're spending a R100,000 a month, the last thing you care about is "loyalty" points. What annoyed me is being charged R200 for ebucks linking.

Strangely enough, I still earned almost 4000 ebucks this month.

On the contrary - those pushing through large spend amounts on their cards are the very people who can benefit the most ... accumulating sufficient frequent flyer miles etc. And they also the very customers who have a choice of cards in their wallets.

FNB are now providing no incentive for their Platinum customers to select their FNB card when deciding how to pay.

I'd love to bugger off to Investec... but they won't have my un-degreed ass :( prime -1% on my credit card is the only incentive I'd want... then I'd buy my vehicles, etc on credit card :p

Just to get some context - why would anyone who has the ability to spend R200k a month on card swipes care about capping of how much eBucks they earn? What, you need the eBucks to top-up your prepaid airtime?

"If you are an FNB Platinum card holder - you will want to read this."

This is not NEWS, it was discussed when FNB announced their new charges.

My solution is easy. My wife has her own card, When I hit the limit we switch to her card.

R200k spend = 26 666 BA miles with Std Bank

Do that 2 months running and you have a free ticket to London or a free upgrade ...

Those with the ability to spend that often got there because they are careful with their pennies

Then go to Standard Bank. Make use of the free account transfer. No need to sit with such pathetic awards offered by FNB.

Because everything else in FNB's overall offering is good. This, however, is bad. If enough customers voiced their displeasure - FNB may actually take the time to review their thought processes ( or lack thereof ) with regards to their Platinum clientele.

My guess is to many people qualify for platinum now, so all the "benefits" are becoming expensive....

I too complained about this. FNB are launching a new product under the premier offering in October called Graphite which sits above platinum and below Private ( R750K - 1.1Mil pa) The unlimited ebucks will apply to this account as well as free entry to the international slow lounge and access ( charged for) to SLOW in the City.

So im guessing theyre diluting the platinum product offering in order to make space and create benefits (which we had already) for graphite account holders. Great way to garner further income and charge more for something we had already.

Google FNB Graphite - first link is to the terms and conditions for card issuing, it pretty much states all of the above in there.

Ohhh...interesting... that would explain why they've been down scaling platinum the past year or so...

It would be great if that comes with a more personalised interest rate, and services.

*hold thumbs this might allow me to break away from my ABSA bond*
