Hi all, hope you are all well.

I am a newbie using fnb share builder. Minimum fund balance was R100, until I received this notice via SMS today:

FNB: Due to extreme and unforeseen market volatility as well as delayed pricing data the minimum account balance on your Share Builder and/or Share Investor products will be temporarily increased to R3,000. This will ensure that your trades are processed seamlessly and reduce the risk of your account being in arrears. This is a temporary measure and will be reassessed in line with market conditions. Hello. I would like to find out how did you eventually manage with the FNB Builder account. I've just made the mistakes of going through and opening the FNB Share Builders account without checking reviews on it and without understanding how it really works. They currently are holding the minimum R100 which went through from my easy account and now I want to close it as tomorrow.

Just email the investment desk, request to close your account. I assume you want to close the account

One day I was browsing through FNB products and I came through FNB Share Builder, I decided to give it a try. What an expensive mistake. It costs R100 to open the account and you have to pay a monthly fee of R45. I find this to be very expensive. They debit the monthly fee on of your account every month.

I just called in FNB Shares department and I was on the call for less than a minute and the account was closed. I wouldn't recommend this account to people who want to invest small amount. I believe it is for people who are investing R100k and above.

Most of us have paid a bit of school fees when it comes to using high cost investment accounts, so welcome to the club. Way back when I started my Sharesaver account with them, there were no monthly costs, only transaction fees. A short while later they started taking a monthly fee, and that's when I noped out. Since then I've been using mostly Easy Equities. For the odd US stock that isn't available there, I use eToro.

Also, just because you have 100k+ invested or to invest, doesn't make the heavy fees right. I refuse to pay what I don't have to.

I'm glad to hear that you managed to make money from Share Builder account.

How is EE going? And which investments are you on? I would like to start with R200pm investements.

It's hard to say if I made any cash with the share saver stuff I had. If I did, it was menial.

As for EE, I am happy with them. They are not great as a trading platform if you are heavy into that. They are more suited to buying and holding. Most of my portfolio is with them and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

If I were just looking to drop anything up to 3k a month and nothing more, I'd probably go the TFSA route and just buy Satrix MCSI World. Otherwise at the moment I'm sitting with a lot spread over the different account options. Some of them were not a good idea, and I have way too much invested in SA for my liking.

My best ZAR pick:

* Satrix Top 40 (only because it's recovered)

My best TFSA pick:

* Ashburton 1200 (same as Satrix MCSI world but a bit more expensive with a bit more exposure - not sure if the extra expense is worth it but it's rather small, so I've stuck with it)

My best US picks:

* Vanguard S&P 500

My best AUS pick:

* BetaShares Australia 200 ETF

I closed all my fnb investing accounts, from tfsa to normal investing!

Bank with a bank!

Invest smartly (not via a bank)
