FNB's customer expenditures on Netflix and Mr D Food during 2020

FNB has seen a big upsurge in customer spending on home delivery, video and music streaming apps in the time since South Africa’s COVID-19 lockdown first started.

The increase has led to a boom in the usage of platforms like Mr D Food, Netflix, Showmax, iTunes, and Spotify, the bank said.

FNB Card CEO Chris Labuschagne said that individual customers were not necessarily spending more on any of the categories, but that more users across its base were buying the services.

iTunes, Spotify, and YouTube Music were the major benefactors of this increase.

How stupid are people. You can have Youtube ad free + Youtube Music Premium for almost the same price with Youtube Premium.

Why take Youtube Music instead?

People never learn... Why give Showmax (Naspers / Multchoice) your hard earned money?

Launched in January 2021, it allows customers on the FNB and RMB Private Bank apps to create a virtual card with a changing CVV number, limiting the chances of fraud.

However, it does not impact the renewal authentication for annual or monthly subscription.

Uhm so I’m still on the fence about this really working. Local apps or their acquiring partners seems to be not catering for virtual cards properly as it usually breaks.

Will change my Uber one and see but this far the experience is major suckage as you get subs failure or adhoc payment failure at a time your can least afford the time to correct.

The virtual card experience for me has been sucky.. and we haven’t even gotten the nice things like limiting spend or merchant etc

Whereas the Capitec experience for me with the virtual cards has been very good.
I've used it on Uber a couple of times and Bolt actually.
Also along with Vumatel going off every month on it.

And I'm able to set a spend limit on the virtual card too.

Just wish more of the vendors in my parts had more of the snapscan kind of thing happening.
The Capitec app's barcode scan and pay (Masterpass yes?) works well when I do find places that make use of the feature.

No one asked if MyBB's Hanno and FNB's Chris are related yet? Send the eBucks for the forumites my bru :p

Wait, does that mean you can use an FNB Virtual Card to pay for online subscriptions (like Netflix)?

How would/does that work when the CVV will be different every month?

Some vendors are whitelisted not to need the updated CVV for renewals

FNBs virtual cards don't work with rain - I had to update mine every month.
