Grasshoppers, meal worms and other bugs don't have to taste to bad. Also they weren't eating maggots, it was worms

problem will be overcoming the stigma built up over generations.

I mean our entire food supply needs to change,
and in order to do that, some serious "reeducation" will need to occur.

kind that comes from a dictatorship most likely.
so if China with its growing population, decided to ban Cows/Chickens/Pork altogether,
and produce insects/Fish as food in industrial quantities.

that would be the litmus test.

Face it. It will be mostly the case in overpopulated countries. Countries that manage fine now and have good family planning will still be able to produce enough meat for their citizens.

Yeah, like I've tried various insects,mostly dried and they aren't so bad. Trying to get other people to try them is another story. Though if they were processed into other shapes, or sizes it would probably go a long way.

You are on the money with this....

I am not the worlds biggest egg/chicken consumer so for me keeping chickens would largely be a waste, but for many people it would be an easy way to provide for the family if they could get over the slaughtering hurdle.
Problem is when your wife starts to love the chickens and doesn't want to kill any, and the chicken empire finally rises up.

If the pressure gets that high a world war would break out that would wipe out a few billion humans. That is my guess anyways.

Simple fact of the matter is that free markets have completely solved the world's food supply problem. The Netherlands is the case in point:

Netherlands is smaller than Mmumalanga yet they export something like $61 billion worth of agicultural products alone.
South Africa exported about $11 billion.

In fact most of Europe is highly productive in their agricultural exports, despite them being relatively small.

There are today some amazing plant-based meat substitutes that even the most hardened meat eater as in I hate vegans level category will not be able to tell the difference, and the tech and research creating these products is improving.

Add to that equation lab-grown meat which hasn't been commercially mass-produced yet, there will be many options in the future to get meat or meat tasting product besides the raising and slaughter of animals.

I ate grasshoppers when I was in Asia some 15 years ago.

They were absolutely delicious. Not a dish I would easily forget.

Mother in law does just that. She buys a couple of chickens, raise them until they're old enough, send them off to the abbatoir for processing and packaging, get them back and sell them off. Enough profit for her to make a decent living off that.

Think this is my moms plan for me... she keeps asking about my kidneys.

The likely thing to happen is that we will switch to lab grown meat for ethical reasons. Not environmental ones.

It is not that easy. You need lots of plant protein to produce the fake and lab-grow meat. Where are we going to grow all the plant protein, our soil is already depleted from nutrition and minerals.

BTW, the plant-based meat substitutes is highly processed, full of chemicals and unhealthy.

Mass would be a better indication of how export amounts, I think the exchange rates might be skewing those stats
