Actually, this shows up Telkom even more. To think that they implement a cap of 15GB to stop abuse is laughable when compared to our Telkrap cap. I get capped after 2-3 weeks even if I don't abuse ADSL! I would gladly buy the new BT ADSL offering even at 5 times the price!
The same goes for interest rates. In America, if interest rates go up 0.5%, it is an enormous national economic disaster!

TheRabbi LOL LOL! there are tons more ISP's they can go to , that is one of many and who cares its still a MILLION times better than telkom, do you work for telkom? BANDWIDTH ABUSE!? LOL people in SA cant even get decent bandwidth LET ALONE ABUSE IT! WHAT IS ABUSE?! you pay for it, you can use it end of story, please if you work for telkum please just piss off, I pay for a service I may use it as i please SA is the only place in the god damn world where this "bandwidth abuse" thing is such a huge excuse so as to warrent us being abused left, right and center by a company that cares ****all about us and our needs. Go play with your 14.4k modem and download your e-mails once a month but be carefull you might be abusing the bandwidth! LOL BROADBAND its made for more than just surfing and e-mail something we cant dream of in SA we are missing out so badly cause we cant do half the things others do with theirs. The only reason you dont moan is cause your too damn dumb to see how far SA is lagging behind in the internet field, and its not cause we are a poor 4th world nation its cause we have TEL***

BT are in the minority - Most of the UK isp's don't cap - and if they do the price drops significantly - a lot less than the BT prices anyway - and a report out today shows that BT is rapidly losing DSL market share

Right, for all the moaners!!! Well we would not have to moan if we were no being raped by telkom every day of our lives. So BT is capping, WOW... 30gig cap!!!! 10times our cap. But you would have know that right. I m sure you also know that line rental is included in that, of course you knew that too. Uk has ISP offers of UNcapped lines 2meg down at 50 quid. 3 times as fast at nearly half the price. But no you wanna defend Telkom. Please tell me where you live/work, I wanna come rob u blind and then stand back and watch you defend me cause it happens else where in the world.

Ouch, guys. If you feel so powerless and abused over here and a cheap high speed internet connection really means so much to you, why not move to the UK? Remember, you get 5 times the bandwidth for nearly half the price, plus you'd be earning more!

All the article demonstrates is that Telkom's policies are not unique in the world, even if they are at the extreme end of the scale. Plus abuse is an issue. If the service were uncapped, Telkom would have to be able to ensure they could carry around 120GB / month / user, or at least be able to throttle everyone's connection as necessary, to keep rates up.

Its so laughable that telkom is a proudly south african company. They contribute most likely the most to actually ICT ppl immigrating cause of their strangulation of our economy.

U know BT is probably the future of telkom in this country.
"Despite this, BT reckons its price cuts are competitive and give customers the "best ever value broadband from a name you can trust"."
thats how telkom will hopefully sound in the future when they start having stiff competition(though probably only in the next ten to fifteen years)

Proud South african rip offs.

BT's actions really aren't comparable to Telkom's. What BT here is doing is the same as if Imaginet or Mweb were to decide to implement a cap - not the actual telecommunications provider. If you don't want the cap, you can just go to another ISP. Can't do the same thing here, can we?

General statement regarding the capping trend.

The original intent of the Internet and the sentiment of those who invented it is being squashed and thrown to the dogs in the name of profit.

The net is supposed to create opportunities for the masses and be open to all. What we see today is a massive effort by those with money, to grab the net and restrict it in such a way that independent expansion and development of it is becoming virtually impossible.

It is sad and will be the death of something special.

The internet as far as my knowledge goes was invented as a tool for education. A medium of exchanging information between Universities in the USA.
People like our own government has lost focus on the fact that it was and still is the best and cheapest tool to provide education. By Telkom offering discounts to schools is a step in the right direction, but falls short of what schools should be getting. And also what we as the SA Public should be getting. The internet to Telkom is none other than a tool in making it's shareholders happy. The state as it's major shareholder fails its people daily the longer it lets Telkom Rule the Roost.
While this country was still grasping 56k, the rest of the world was involved heavily with ADSL. Now that ADSL has come to SA, the masses cannot afford it. Evidently, something was really wrong in the long term plans in Telkom, even before it even became a listed company. And it doesn't matter which way you look at the bigger picture, the blame always falls back to the state. This government might get "full marks" for its liberalisation ideals, but when it comes to other matters they are dismally hopeless.

Look at Mbeki. Now after years of telling him that his policies on Zimbabwe are useless, now he admits that his “silent diplomacy” didn’t work. I mean please. Quite frankly I agree with Seramane of the DA if you read between the lines of what he says in this article, http://www.news24.com/News24/South_Africa/Politics/0,6119,2-7-12_1552025,00.html
That who has Mugabe got to blame now for the countries problems. There are more elephants in Zimbabwe than white people. He has run out of people to blame for the countries woes. Now the people that live there are looking for other reasons, like the fact that Mugabe and the rest of his scoundrels stole all the money. They stole the money the UK gave them and they steal from their own state coffers daily. It’s a pity that ordinary people in Zimbabwe are suffering. But it will take more suffering for them to oust their “democratically elected” president. As I said before on this thread, Ex Republica Forma Populare Tyrannis Oritur applies to Zimababwe. Nepad and the African renaissance will fail because of corruption and political interference. Now we allow another thief into our lovely land, none other than Mr Aristide from Haiti who has just finished raping his own country. Plus we must pay for his stay. Why dont we see if maybe Saddam doesn't want assylum while we are about it.
Democracy in Africa doesn’t work. Well Mr Mbeki, prove us wrong. I challenge you.

I hope you see how it is justified by some of the responses here... And I don't have to point out the sarcasm, right?

As far as the internet being free for all... well, that died when it started costing to provide it. We can only hope for a day when it's like bread, VAT-free, taken for granted, ready-sliced and good with lots of toppings.

I also agree it's an insane statement. But that is my opinion. I don't make a living out of, IT. I can understand the frustration of people that do.
