Forced move on Telkom ADSL to Telkom Fibre in Fourways

A Telkom rep just came past also attempting to force me on to fiber from copper saying "We're getting rid of copper." etc.
They wanted me to sign up a deal for R449 or R499.... can't remember which figure. That was the cheapest figure, and also for a 4mb line. And it was with modems and dongles and goodness knows whatever else.

At the end of the day I'm paying R140 odd for the bogus ADSL fee and R120 odd for some capped data each month. I really don't need to/want to spend more on ADSL, nor do I want a bunch of other devices added to the clutter.

Still, I was alarmed by the "we're getting rid of copper" and signed an preorder form before discussing with my better half. :( Although, I only signed the form because the line isn't in my name and they need an affidavit to process anything.

I hate that I'm such a pushover. :(

What was he quoted?
It would, why wouldnt it?

Can't remember how much exactly but I think it was in the region of around R500 per month.

It wouldn't benefit him as he is using a capped data product and doesn't use much data every month. I doubt he even uses his cap up every month.

There is nothing we can do but bow down to Telkom's monoploy of ADSL.... Such a sad state

If one is moved over to Fibre, would you then have to use Telkom as your ISP?

Note that this "Fibre" they speak of is not FTTH but FTTC, with copper from the curb to your house.

Any ISP can be used on Telkom's products, whether FTTH or FTTC. Most ISPs are part of Telkom FTTH pilot projects.

Ah, thanks for clearing that up, seems like we've had a similar upgrade pitch from Telkom at our complex but I wasn't sure of the details. It seemed though as if they were trying to sell it as bundles.

Oooh.... a complex? Now you had better ask them the right questions! E.g. what terminating equipment will you required in your unit?

The full FTTH projects are being undertaken in complexes so it IS possible that they want to sell you a full fibre service.

Apparently nothing in our home changes, so from this discussion I figured that they meant FTTC, but I'll be sure to ask. I'm worried that I'll be forced to take a bundle with telkom which was very expensive compared to the current after-hours uncapped service I currently have.

You are not compelled to change your current line speed or ISP package. Don't let them BS you.

They are sales staff working on a commission basis.

Yeah, same story here - I am also living in a complex.

Glad to hear that. :) I would rather upgrade my line to 4mb when I am ready. I think that was the basic problem - they need everyone on 4mb at least, so they figured they could scare people into signing up for packages at the same time. >.<

An update on this matter. My friend in Fourways is still on his 2MB ADSL line as he refused to upgrade and pay anything extra.

It seems to have been a over zealous consultant trying to sell more expensive services that he didn't require.
