Ford Developing Laser Ignition

Now this is interesting, I would love to see this in practice!

Ford Motor Co. and researchers at the University of Liverpool are developing a car ignition system that swaps spark plugs for a laser beam to start vehicles while generating fewer greenhouse gas emissions.

Wonder how long they last. Swapping out 4 laser at every service could be expensive.

Does the laser ignite the combustion chamber which then allows smoke through the catalytic converter and then out into the atmosphere?
