When motorists pull up next to Sibongiseni Nkosi in Auckland Park, he smiles, waves and asks them about their day. But unlike a month ago, he does not have to beg them for food or small change.

Instead, 22-year-old Nkosi is proudly earning his keep as a trainee petrol attendant to support himself and gran at home.

And it is all thanks to his kind act of helping motorist Vic Campher push his broken down car two weeks ago - something he never thought would turn his life around.

Campher, whose hobby is classic cars, told News24 he was driving his old Jaguar down Kingsway Avenue when it broke down and he was stuck.

"It was 18:30 and getting dark. I was worried about how to get back but then Tom, which is Sibongiseni's street name, came running along and started helping me."

Campher said they had to push the car back to the Volvo dealership where he is a managing director.

Ah, the kindness of strangers.

I remember when our old car kept breaking down, there was always a bloke or two who leapt to help us push it off the road.
And when my bike broke down in Bryanston, it was a roadside fruit-seller who helped me with it.

EDIT: they always ran away waving cheerfully before we could give them any money, so don't start.

trainee petrol attendant? you mean there is training course to wash your windows and fill the car with petrol.

so is there a course for car guards? to wave their arms around and say I'll watch your car,

Are you serious?
What should he do appoint him as head of the dealership?

I never said what position did I?

You ever bought a car? Doesn't look like it . They have drivers, cleaners, car wash employees and a long list of uneducated jobs.

He has to learn the ropes. I think he has to go through some sort of probation where he's taught health and safety aspects of the job, people skills, processing of payments, etc and assessed on a set criteria at the end of the training period.

Cleaning function is usually outsourced.

You need skills to clean the offices, was the cars, make coffee, do registrations/queuing?
Menial functions are usually outsourced to service providers and not hired directly by the business (except for drivers)
