Well according to our lords and saviours: the South African government, this task is too complex for an ordinary motorist to do, therefore we need petroleum conveying experts to do it for us.

We have an oversupply of this... Even the countries that fuel their own cars have them but I'd rather have someone with some training do it for all of us. Imagine fueling next to a cowboy

Did a Scuba diving tour to Dahab in the Red Sea some years ago, on the way back to Sharm El Sheikh airport our driver stopped to fill up with petrol, and then happily smoked a cigarette while pumping fuel

Petrol attendants probably also serve as a crime deterrent. Petrol stations would otherwise quickly become like a watering hole in SA where predators wait to pounce on others at night.

So it's safer to always have someone there so may as well have them top up our tanks too.
