Former IT admin “used backdoors” to help new employer

And this is why you hire competent IT people to clean up anything that may have been left over from a previous employee.

I don't get it. He was working at a a clothing company and then left to work for a IT company. How can he gain advantage for the new company by looking at records for the old company?

I would use network diagrams and some work I used at old companies not to have to redo it again at the new company.

From the article:
Columbia claims Leeper used his access to gain insight into the company’s upcoming business decisions, especially those related to its IT infrastructure.

“This information allowed Leeper to gain a competitive advantage in his dealings as Denali CTO with his former employer,” stated the report.

Wonder is such cases exist within SA?

Corporate espionage is quite real.

Yup I've had a number of cases over the years of instantly revoking access of a user and marching them out the door for selling insider information.

In other cases longer term monitoring of activities to gather evidence.

Happens amazingly often and for things you wouldn't even consider.

Oh yes. The first one that I was aware of happened in the late 80's and was quietly dealt with between the two companies involved at the time. The individual involved was dismissed by the company he tried to use the back door for on the other company's system.
