Former police spokesperson Vincent Mdunge was sentenced to five years imprisonment by the Durban Regional Court on Monday.

Mdunge was convicted last year of two counts of fraud and one of forgery for allegedly presenting a fake matric certificate to gain promotion in the police force and to gain entrance to do further studies at the University of South Africa.

In a very brief court session, Magistrate Thandeka Fikeni said in sentencing that she had taken into account the fact that Mdunge was a first time offender.

However, she pointed out that Mdunge held a position of status and was a high-ranking officer, and that white collar crime such as corruption and fraud is rife in society.

“There is absolutely nothing respectable about white collar crime,” she said.

Appeal

Mdunge’s lawyer, Advocate Yusuf Omar, sought leave to appeal the conviction and the sentence.

This was granted by Fikeni, who also extended Mdunge’s R5 000 bail conditions pending the outcome of his appeal.

Mdunge, 49, was convicted on a count of fraud for receiving a salary to which he was not entitled.

The highest rank a police officer can achieve in the police without a matric certificate is warrant officer. Mdunge had reached the rank of colonel.

He was found guilty of fraud for submitting his forged matric certificate to the University of SA to obtain admission to a National Diploma in Police Administration course.

Prosecutor Barend Groen told the court earlier this year that the State had determined that Mdunge had received R874 901.31 as a salary that he was not entitled.

This would be the difference between his salary as a colonel and that of a warrant officer.

However, on Monday Fikeni made no order for Mdunge to repay any money.

Former police spokesman loses high court appeal against fraud, forgery charges

Mdunge, 50, was convicted on a count of fraud for receiving a salary to which he was not entitled.

Former police spokesperson Vincent Mdunge’s bid to overturn his fraud and forgery convictions was dismissed by the Pietermaritzburg High Court on Monday.

National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Natasha Ramkisson-Kara confirmed that Mdunge’s appeal had been unsuccessful, as did Mdunge’s lawyer Yusuf Omar.

In 2014, the Durban Regional Court convicted Mdunge of forgery for allegedly presenting a fake matric certificate to gain promotion in the police force and to gain entrance to do further studies at the University of South Africa (Unisa).

Mdunge, 50, was convicted on a count of fraud for receiving a salary to which he was not entitled.

Fraudster Mdunge fails to report to prison

Durban - Convicted fraudster and former police spokesperson Vincent Mdunge had not – as of 5:30pm on Wednesday – reported to prison, according to authorities.

It was reported - and a source at Westville Prison confirmed - that Mdunge was set to hand himself over on Wednesday.

This after a bid to overturn his 2014 fraud and forgery convictions were dismissed by the Pietermaritzburg High Court on Monday.

Mdunge’s lawyer, Yusuf Omar, on Tuesday said that he was in the process of finalising instructions from him, to bring another application before the Supreme Court of Appeal in Bloemfontein.

Omar said once the necessary arrangements were made, he would bring another application before the High Court to have Mdunge’s bail extended.

Top cop Vincent Mdunge behind bars

Durban - “Victors survive even the deepest of the pit”.

These are the words on convicted fraudster and former KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Vincent Mdunge’s WhatsApp status, which was last updated last Thursday.

Mdunge handed himself to prison officials two weeks ago to start his five-year prison term. He was reportedly spotted wearing full orange
prison uniform and leg irons at King Edward VIII Hospital in Durban on Monday, while being escorted by heavily armed prison officials.

Going from being the mouthpiece of the province’s police to convicted fraudster, and after a lengthy failed court bid to stay out of prison,
he reportedly sat in a queue like all other patients at the public hospital and waited for his turn to enter a consultation room under
the watchful eye of the prison guards.

A source at the hospital said Mdunge came in to have some tests done and then left the facility.

Mdunge was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment by the Durban Regional Court in May 2014 on two counts of fraud and one of forgery.

Magistrate Thandeka Fikeni found that he had presented a fake matric certificate that secured him a promotion, advanced his career in the
police service and gained him entry to the University of South Africa (Unisa) to continue his studies.

Ex-KZN police spokesperson jailed for fake matric certificate gets parole

Former KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Vincent Mdunge, who was jailed over a fake matric certificate, has been granted parole, the Department of Correctional Services said on Wednesday.

"Mr Mdunge participated in relevant correctional programmes and was further assessed by our special services experts who, among others, include social workers and psychologists in order to determine his suitability for parole placement," said department spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo.

"The parolee will complete the remainder of the sentence in the system of community corrections, and must comply with a specific set of conditions. He will also be subjected to supervision until the sentence expires."

Mdunge's parole was approved by the correctional supervision and parole boards with effect from August 20, which means he spent two of his five-year sentence in jail.
