Former Springbok prop and current Old Greys coach Ollie le Roux has been suspended for one week by the club after he was involved in a scuffle at a match this past weekend.
Le Roux is being accused of throwing punches during his side’s match against Crusaders in Heidedal in Bloemfontein.
Gino de Broize, 29, a former prop for the Crusaders team, told Netwerk24 that Le Roux’s behaviour was "disappointing" and a "disgrace to the sport".
De Broize claims that there was a fist-fight between him and Le Roux.
Le Roux insists he did not punch anyone. He said some of the Crusaders players may have thrown a few punches, and said De Broize attempted to tackle him from behind, but couldn’t land a punch.
“He is a coward because he attacked me from behind,” said Le Roux.
Le Roux said the incident was inexcusable, but that a series of events led to him grabbing Crusaders coach, Eustace Lemmetjies, by the throat after the latter apparently made “remarks about a black player”.
“I asked him more than six times to please stop and keep quiet. It’s not aimed at Crusaders, it’s about my player.”
Le Roux said he approached Lemmetjies in a calm manner and requested him to stop.
However, De Broize’s version of how events unfolded about 10 minutes before the final whistle, differs to how Le Roux described it. He insists the incident was not racial.
“The spectators were behind the guys. They were singing and in a jovial mood in the stands.”
Some enthusiastic fans sat right behind the Old Greys players. It is reported that Le Roux suddenly walked into the crowd, where he and Lemmetjies fought before Le Roux grabbed Lemmetjies by the neck.
De Broize said he wanted to stop the fight before he and Le Roux tackled each other.
“There was a bit of pushing and shoving before fists flew. Both of us got shots in before we fell to the ground.”
Le Roux, 42, played 54 Tests for the Springboks between 1994 and 2002.
