Former Vodashop owner says online platforms are killing stores

Vodacom and Telkom have seen growth in both their online and in-store sales. However, former Vodashop owner Bennie Roux believes there is no future for brick-and-mortar cellphone shops.

While both operators found online sales had surged due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Telkom noted that regarding sales, its physical stores still outperform its online platforms.

Because Telkoms online platform is bad.

And lets just say, if I am going to buy online might as well just use Takealot and my credit card, and get a nice selection of cases as well to choose from, and the option of dual SIM phones with no shenanigans.

No online was around only really recently, What's killing stores is Shopping centers and the strip mall rental agreements. THAT is what is killing or has killed privately owned stores. Over and above of everything else.

Kak staff kills stores.

Staff, that are incompetent, kills stores faster than anything else. Yes the Malls are gouging the shops, but the Landlords don't mind screwing themselves either.

Vodacom shop, boytjie, tells me, Yo, you must upgrade, you got 600mb data now, with upgrade, you get 1Gig. Data, for less money.

So I say, yeah 500mb anytime data, and 500mb night owl data. So I get 100mb less usable data, because I am not a night owl, so that data has bugger all value. All he says is EISH!!
Now if I could get 1 Gig anytime data, and a phone the same size as my current Galaxy S10e. He would have gotten an upgrade, on the spot.

I always feel nervous in a mall when I walk past the cellphone and the jewellery shops.

The mask impairs my vision and makes me very self conscience about the size of my head. I can feel their eyes on me :(

Twice I went online, at local shop you have to pay in R300 connecting fee, voda, and second time online store had phone that the shop did not stock. I believe online less forms to sign

This store owner is an idiot. E-commerce is less than 2% of commerce

I was in a VC shop this weekend, to do my kids number porting. Before that ? Maybe like 5-8 years ago. I have renewed my contracts online. I buy my cell phone (or keep it). No need for a store.

But then again, when I pass Cell phone shops (VC/MTN etc).. they are packed with people. Hence my reason to do it online.
