So my wife has decided that due to Covid and international travel being out for a while, that we should really explore SA instead.
I like the idea and there are tons of little towns and random places we would like to see.
My 3 series isnt really going to cut it for cruising 100km+ dirt roads which are fairly common to some areas.

So I have been looking, Im not really interested in the smaller SUV's like the X-trail, CR-V, Kuga etc. Those all just seem like hatchbacks with a bit more ground clearance.

Enter the Fortuner and Everest, which are a lot more solid and have a lot more space.
So if you had a R400k budget and could choose between the two, what would you go for?
Is there anything else obvious that Im missing that I should consider?

Not really interested in a double cab, those things are horrible to live with on a daily basis.

For such a price you should include a test drive of each.

If you can get a second hand everest limited at that price (from 2017) you should go for it.

The fortuna imo drives too much like a bakkie (atleast the previous models don't know the current model).

Yeah Im definitely going to test drive a couple and see.
I know a couple of people who own both, general consensus seems to be that the Everest is a much better on road drive than the Fortuner.

Hyundai Santa Fe and Volvo XC90 would be a good alternative to the obvious choice of Fortuner.
Both nice cars, Volvo is for life because the resale is a joke, so I doubt I would go that way.
The Hyundai isnt bad but a lot less examples floating around and Im just not so sure about their durability.

Most vehicles lose their value that is why with Volvo is has to be obtained way below book, and you do get them.
Only issue with Fortuner it's a hijackers no1 go to SUV.
Can't go wrong with reliability and value.

Hyundais really aren't bad (I drive a Accent since 2012 - bought new) - just a bit 'boring'.

For exploring the back roads and dirt roads I'd go with the Everest.
Maybe look for something with AWD as an alternative?

Yeah you can pick Volvo's up for a song when they are out of warranty, the stuff that can go wrong with them isnt cheap so Im less inclined to go that way.
I live in a city with very few hijackings and Im in a permanent work from home position, so its much less of a concern to me than if I lived in JHB.

From the looks of it you won't go wrong with the everest then, provided you get the limited (comes with usefull bells and whistles).

The Mitsubishi Pajero or Pajero Sport is another option, it will have more standard kit than the Ranger and even way more than the Fortuner.

I like the Everest, my only problem with it is that it's a Ford.

I don’t understand how he’s getting either of those let alone a Pajero for R400k. But then again the age wasn’t specified.

I haven't heard of the Everest yet, but did some reading.

it looks like it's based off the Ranger chassis...which would mean that the Everest is to the Ranger like what the Fortuner is to the Hilux.

Sounds decent, looks decent. Hope the price is decent. Biggest benefit is it's not a Toyota - so less of a hijack risk.
