Port Elizabeth - Four people died and 15 others sustained injuries in an accident involving a minibus taxi and a sedan vehicle on the N2 highway between Hemingway and Gonubie near East London on Monday.

Department of Transport spokesman, Unathi Bhinqosa, said the drivers of both vehicles were among the survivors.

Bhinqosa said both vehicles were traveling from East London when the accident occurred.

Yoh! Wonder how fast the taxi was going initially. The taxi body held up pretty well and if they had been wearing seat-belts none would have been ejected.

That white hatchback in front of the bakkie just just avoided the taxi (even though its front bumper does come off when it hits something at the end).

It's a downhill. So cars rapidly accelerate even without depressing the accelerator.

So a very steep downhill? We have a nice long decent gradient downhill here in Pretoria East and I know how cars react on it, and it's definitely not rapidly accelerate unless clutch is in or it's out of gear.

I'm thinking the taxi was cruising down the section of freeway and then decided to cut into the off ramp to the expressway , seen it happen every day there .

Thats actually a good question.. I think the new ones do, but that looks to be an older taxi so very likely not... and yeah I doubt any passengers actually wear them anyway...

The biggest problem with that is that the new taxis would have seatbelts based on the legal capacity, people wearing their seatbelts would mean fewer people being squeezed in so you can imagine how quickly that would get shut down by the taxi driver...

There is that as well...

Pity the passengers are too shyte scared of the whole lot of them to actually force this issue on the drivers.

Is it not rule of law that all passengers in any vehicle must wear a seat belt?

Only if there are seatbelts available which there most likely aren't on older taxis

If so why not hold the driver or owner liable?

Fully agree with this... it should be the duty of the driver to enforce safety standards in his/her vehicle.

Traffic officers hardly pay attention to it in roadblocks. However, they pay attention to it on small cars.
Few years ago, my sister boarded a long distance taxi, and as standard practice, buckled up. Taxi driver immediately descended on her and ordered her to remove it, threatening to kick her out of the taxi. She refused and dared him to touch her...

Very often, some taxi drivers don't even bother with road marking and signs. In some cases, disobeying traffic officers, especially on busy intersections where workload is high. I see this almost daily.

And the sad part is that for many people there are no other options with regards to transport...:(
