Four lions with their paws and jaws removed were found dead at the Rietvlei Nature Reserve outside Pretoria on Friday morning, the city of Tshwane's agriculture MMC Dana Wannenburg said.

"Today is a sad day for Tshwane as we report that four lions were killed in the Rietvlei Nature Reserve last night," Wannenburg said on Friday.

Their butchered carcasses were found in the lion enclosure by conservation officials early in the morning.

The police were called in and suspect that the lions may have been poisoned and hacked apart on Thursday night. Their carcasses were taken to Onderstepoort for analysis.

Chinese medicine

This is horrible, hope they find the inside man.

These lions are a rescued and are sterilized they are not used as petting lions and rietvlei has been very responsible with the care of these great giants.

The Rhino’s has been dehorned and left alone for a bit.
Why Chinese medicine? Could be indigenous SA medicine.

No, it's Chinese medicine. This is not the first case. They remove claws and teeth I think. Lions and local medicine? I never heard of that one before.

Locally, they poach pythons and smaller animals.

True. Above posters just making their prejudices known. Local concoctions hardly have lion parts as ingredients. That's why lions remained relatively untouched until authorities intensified war on rhino poaching.

These poachers also target other big cats.

Edit: In the days gone by, lions were hunted for their skins and mane.

Have you never been to the muti market in Jozi? Anything goes from African rock python to almost any mammal parts.
