Would it be possible to develop a network that is implemented by a community.
Eg. a city has a few thousand houses with wireless repeaters on their roofs making a giant mesh system, and a few houses connect to the “main international/national backbones”?
If one node is dead there would be hundred others to cover the faults?
The more people that installs a wireless thing on their roofs the faster and cheaper it will become?
Why can’t we make internet free in a way like this
Im pretty sure governments can establish rules and stuff so the network is kind of regulated.

Dreaming too big probably, but hey its 22:22pm

Like a giant peer to peer service... im pretty sure the world is going peer to peer. With cryptocurrency and file sharing etc. soon we wont need any centralized businesses for things like this???

What you are thinking of is called a WUG. Capetown and Joburg and just about every city in the world has one - though they are more like large singular networks than connected to the internet (someone would have to pay for all that bandwidth...)

As for a free global "internet", there's the outernet:

Ku-band based satellite internet. You can hook in basically anywhere in the world at 30kbps with little more than a Raspberry Pi and a passive LNB
