According to Sentech, SABC1,2,3 and ETv are Free Access TV channels

Free Access Se Voet !

Free to air, Free access, what's the difference?

I have a question though... can all DSTV decoders (e.g. DSD990, PVR, etc) be set to show FTA's or only certain ones(which ones)?

As far as I'm aware, yes. At your own risk bla bla bla etc.
There is some problem with the dual view, i think the 2nd tv/channel cannot show them, or you can't have one tv watching dstv and the other on the public boquet, or something along those lines.

I guess Free To Air means channels that are not encripted. In other words, u don't need a sim card or cam to decript them. Free Access are free-to-air channels but are encripted to limit their access to the targeted region like SA for SABC 1,2,3 and eTV. You need a smart card to decript them.

I have no real experience, I have only seen one decoder that could not accept the settings required... it was a REALLY old one... Pace model, I think.

The newer models all cope.

Seems like a waste of resources encrypting SABC channels considering how crap they are.
Lol
Good point.
But They've got all that money to throw around that we pay them.

E-Tv is still there as per their call centre agents; well... where can i get the DSTV settings again? also the only thing you need to buy the decoder is a tv licence... it uses pas7 and 10 as they say and there was something else forgot it. it sounds good - R1700 - a lil' more then my decoder but good for the grands

What call centre is that?
It is there, Yes, can you see it? No, because it's encrypted!
True! People who want free-to-air (FTA) channels on their decoders must also clarify if they have smart cards for those receivers. Smart cards are for accessing FTA's that are encripted. If u have Multichoice decoder without a smart card, u can try FTA's like God channel, etc, which are NOT encrypted. SABC 1/2/3 and ETv are encrypted, you need a smart card either from Multichoice (for DSTV decoders only) or Vivid (for Sentech Vivid decoders only).

To setup your 990 decoder to receive the free channels see here

To get SABC, Etv you need to pay an annual amount equivalent to roughly the TV licence. This applies to both Vivid and Multichoice. Once you do that there are no extra free channles that one offer you over the other. The DSD990 is half the price of the Vivid and allows you to easily migrate to full DSTV should you wish by just paying your monthly subs.

You should add the BTV settings on your page too, it's worth the few extra keys.

Edit: I noticed that BTV is now on channel 137 on the DSTV boquet....
