Free to Air Channels on HD PVR?

Is there anyway this can be done? Ive done some research and most places say it cant, as all other networks on the HD PVR are permanently disabled. I've tried with a demo unit at hifi corp but it wouldnt finish the scanning process...
Anyone got any up to date news on wether it can or cant be done?
Really wanna purchase one but if it cant do what my existing decoder can its seriously a crap product!
