Well done Stellenbosch Municipality and Mxit for this initiative. Good to see that towns are starting to provide free Internet access - it will definitely boost the economy.

Fantastic news amidst the slew of recent government promises. Nice to see a plan actually get executed by private and public sectors. Gives us a glimmer of hope.

The Cape is cooking!!!

Meanwhile in Gauteng one half is asleep, some are figting about who's gonna fetch the firewood & the pot has been stolen.

Brilliant, however whould the cap be only on traffic outside Stellenbosch with local (Stellenbosch) traffic being uncapped? Would be nice for hosting some network games!!!!

How come all the nice stuff is happening in the Cape?

I mean only hippies and skollies live there. :p

Here in Eastern Cape, nothing , no upgrades of any sort.
ditched my adsl line a long time ago, way tooo frustrating.

very nice .. and you would think that the other metro's will learn from this, as I am sure most of them have similar setups already

now to get one of the Stellenbosch ct-wuggers to inject that free internet into the our network. :whistling:

I wonder if the council thought of the impact this would have on local businesses such as Wish Networks, Adept Internet and Snowball?

Is the council going to supplement their lost income?

Frankly, I'm in agreement with dade.

Wow, eventually, they have been alluding to something like this for frikken ages - thought is was going to be a university metro wireless mesh access network. Glad it is open to everyone, Not Craig - kudos for supporting them with bandwidth.

Challenge is laid down, who is next to take it up?

Don't you start burning all our nice bandwidth with your gaming tendencies:p

Definitely refreshing. Question is, what is provided in terms of this free Wi-Fi, and is the service actually usable. Does it mean that I will now be able to cancel my ADSL line as well as my ISP account?
It should be usable for normal browsing - note they are rate limiting and capping the service - if they are using 802.11n exclusively it will be perfect. Otherwise I hope they are using proper Cisco kit with metro wireless controllers, otherwise it could get a bit painful due to boerseun and his buddies killing the LAN:whistling:

Note Not Craig Jr said they are NOT trying to complete with ADSL/3G etc hence the cap (although 500MB per day free at 1Mbps beats the pants off any of the 3G guys!). If you can use 500MB p/d or less then great!
