Sounds awesome! Finally a metro that actually progresses :)

They are not part of Cape Town Metro, rather District Winelands Municipality - part of the reason the CoCT fibre isn't going to Stellenbosch as initially planned, they weren't sure how to sort out the handover point etc. Bloody frustrating that Winelands District Muni are a bit behind CT Metro, but hopefully it improves. They could have been linking fibre to CT shortly and basically being able to connect directly to ISPs and international bandwidth. Not to mention the multitude of additional benefits. Not sure if the TENET connection is DFA fibre or their own link, but pity they couldn't leverage something here:(

I doubt that we will get coverage in Welgevonden, but then again if they cover places like Pniel and Pnoes then we should get it.

Edit : Forgot to mention, there is free internet in and around my house, just look for the "FreeInternet" SSID :D

Stellenbosch Municipality rather. The District Municipality is not involved. The DM's only supply services to rural areas, but are being phased out slowly.

limiting the service to 1Mbps and a 500MB daily usage cap.
That is more than enough, unless you are a ship hunter!

Stellenbosch are leaders and not followers. This is a great move, we need more visionaries as far as surpassing the "Well we in South Africa so it can't be done" mentality.

Yippee ;)

EDIT: 1 mbit/sec and 500 MB per day. That's just awesome.

Wow, Way to go! I must say, I never saw this coming but wow! What a great Development! Way to go! Way to go Venter!

Stellenbosch gets free 1Mbps while I have to pay a few hundred rand a month for my 384Kbps. That hardly seems fair :(

If, as I suspect (because the article does not mention this), this is a shared resource, you are actually better of with your 384kbps ADSL

Dude this absolutely free. before you even use your bandwith you have to pay telscum almost R300. here you get a free connection and 500mg for moehala

Its a bad move IMO. The serice will become saturated and will result in less clients to other actual businesses that proide the service. Thus the businesses will increase their costs to meet ends meet or close down.

Soon stellenbosch will have only one wifi network thats gonna be saturated.
