Amaze GPS

I've been using this java software, it works very well, and it's free...
Only hassle I have had is a 'bug' that they cannot get the backlight on some symbian phones... nothing a simple app can't sort out.

Anyone else using it?

Only problem is that it uses a data connection to download the maps.... watch your usage.

if you have it in map mode yes; arrow navigation (my preferred anyway) uses next to nothing...

In fact, once it has the route calculated, it literally uses nothing (in fact VC dropped my connection), until you veer of course. and it needs the server to recalc route.

seen it before... never tried it, can't you download the maps beforehand?

No, nothing is saved to the phone, maps are retrieved on the go, as necessary.

Sure, it's not as fancy as the rest of the paid for versions, but it'll run on almost any phone (being JAVA) and no need for memory card upgrades for all the map data.

I reckon it'll suit those starting out.

That's quite ..err.. "amAze-ing" what they've got going here. carudden, does it read the turns out to you so you don't have to actually look at that tiny (compared with, say, a nuvi) phone screen? That seems a good way to do it, with a bluetooth receiver on the dash 'n phone in pocket (or something) and you just listen to it, which is mostly how I follow my nuvi around anyway.

Yup, it's full voice navigation... Has 3km, 500m, 200m, and turn now readings (speakings :p).

Is also correct in it's terminology, small thing but nice, turning off the N1 say, is "Take the next exit right", instead of on a normal road, is at the next intersection, or the like.

Explains circles as "take exit 1/2/3", but shows a very clear diagram on the screen..

Give it a go - it's free!

Whats the bandwidth consumption like?

Good question - I never worry about bandwidth on my cell, my data usage for the month never goes over R10 all in... including other browsing, etc.

There was some explanation on their site about bandwidth for bandwidth sensitive users.

Edit:
link
It is typically only up to 10 - 20 Kbytes of data for in-city routes. Once the route is stored in the phone and as long as you are on-track, you do not need to have data communication with the network. The local software will use this info to guide you with voice and arrows all the way to your destination.

So at R2/MB we're talking about max 0.004c per trip

Ah, so the same smart style of telling you where to go as the nuvi - good to know.

Give it a go - it's free!
Meh, that'd mean buying another GPS just to play with this on my phone  ..still, getting one or another Bluetooth receiver is also WAY cheaper than buying Garmin!

that's the nice thing about a simple bluetooth GPS, the possibilities are unlimited.

Bluetooth GPS receiver? I know nothing :D

How much are they, do they work with a SE K800i, is it easy to set it up with this amaze program, do you pay some kind of subscription to use the GPS on the bluetooth device?

I would like to know how to get around Joey's a little better, I am from Durban.

They are around R600 - R700.

If your phone supports JAVA and Bluetooth - you're set.
There are other Navigation apps for smartphones, this one just happens to be free. (excl. data charges)
