Even MTN here is dog slow. Speedtest won't even run properly. They are probably using FF infra at their sites

We've had what, a power failure every weekend for the past three or four weekends now?
Yes, usually Sunday at 8pm so they're mixing it up today. And they were supposed to have done maintenance on the substation so that it didn't so this!

Ditchling sub tripped again. Amazing how the repairs work for a week and then it's darkness time again.

I caught a message that was deleted that apparently addressed the constant power outages in PE. Basically, they are putting the blame on the old SF6 Circuit Breakers that are old and in need of replacement. There are nine CB's that need to be replaced, and will be rolled out over the next three months.

I'm not sure why the message was deleted, but that is what I read before it disappeared on Telegram and I see they posted the schedule of the CB replacements. I think we need to brace for a few more weeks of this.

Electricity Outage - Ditchling Substation - what’s the plan?

Please note there is currently an electricity outage at the Ditching Substation - Kragga Kamma 1 Tee 66 kV ocb. This Substation feeds electricity to large portions of the Metro. Staff are currently attending to the restoration of supply, and the Metro apologises for the inconvenience.

Residents, this should not be happening this frequently, so what is the way forward?

I visited the Ditchling Substation with the Executive Director: Electricity and Energy on 25 May 2021 to assess the state of the Substation and receive a report on what officials planned to do about the continuous failures.

The 66kV circuit breakers were installed in 1995. The circuit breakers are Sulphur Hexafluoride (SF6) breakers, which have a lifespan of 20-25 years. The trend of current failures means these circuit breakers have reached the end of their useful lifespan.

New circuit breakers have been ordered and delivered to the Metro. Perl road 1, 66kV circuit breaker which was damaged on 23 May 2021 is currently being replaced

A total of 9 circuit breakers will be replaced, this process will take three months and has already commenced.

This is critical maintenance which should have been undertaken already, but as with many maintenance matters sadly has not – the last two years of poor political leadership in this Metro have resulted in this situation of a failure to maintain critical infrastructure.

The coalition government is fixing our beautiful Metro, we appreciate your support as we do so!

See image for the circuit breaker replacements timeline

Together we can take Nelson Mandela Bay Forward Again

We've been sans power for about 10 hours so far. 2x 2-hour load shedding sessions and then the outage that started shortly after 16h00. Apparently there is an issue on one of the overhead lines near Westering.

Hopefully by tomorrow, we'll have power again. Here's to hoping there aren't any more setbacks. What a ride this day has been.

Got worried in Summerstrand when the power didn't come back on at 6pm, we are normally not affected by the Ditchling trips. Lucky it came on at 6:48pm, unrelated issue.

I am looking at doubling the capacity of my inverter storage, trying to decide on Gel batteries or Lithium Ion (Lead acid drop in replacement) as the pricing has come down.

I am trying to remember if FF used to stay up for the whole 4 hour blocks when we had those, I think my node did (when it eventually got UPS lol)
